| After Daisy's helpful comments about my non co-operative basil I had a good look at the other herbs in the herb bed at the new house. None of them really looked very enthusiastic about life and I came to the conclusion that they just weren't happy and had organised some sort of herbal 'go-slow' amongst themselves. Drastic action needed!
So I 'rejuvenated' an old bed on the western side of the house which receives late morning/afternoon sun, is out of the wind and which has a tendency to remain moist. Then transplanted the sulking kids (even the coriander which had started to go to seed) and held my breath.
:-) :-) - they're all flourishing!! All the basils are back to being beautiful, the chives are growing and flowering like crazy, everything else looks just wonderful and to top it off the coriander dropped it's seeds and they've germinated. Daisy, I put the mint into a pot (it was planted into the original bed by the previous owner!) but am continuing to dig up roots and guess I might be doing this for some time yet! LOL.
I think now that they were perhaps exposed to too much wind to be happy but I am very pleased about the results from one weekend's work - I supplied the labour and Mother Nature did the rest! |
