Invisible horseradish!

| Over the years, I've grown some rare and amazing herbs, and I've had some weird things happen with some of them.
The latest, I discovered today. Invisible horseradish! For umpteen years I've had horseradish growing in a large pot. I've harvested it, replanted it, and it's kept coming back. I've even had to remove plants of it which which have grown out through the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot, and some that have started growing in the cracks between the pavers on which the pot stands. This morning, I noticed no leaves in the pot, so I thought I'd harvest the root, and start things up again. Not a sign of even the tiniest little bit of root! Absolutely nothing, except one tiny little curl grub, and one small worm. Bloody marvellous, ain't it? |

| That must be one voracious curl grub with a cast-iron stomach. Looks like a case for Agent Mulder.:) I have just planted a horseradish and having read of its spreading abilities I hope that I have contained it sufficiently. Is it bad as mint? |

| Well, if the curl grub ate it, and the grub remained tiny, I'd say horseradish must be OK for slimmers! I've never been brave enough to plant horseradish in the garden, so I haven't tested out its capacity to take over the world. But the description I have of the plant says 'root system can grow deeply and aggressively and it can become invasive'. That was enough for me! As I said above, I was forever getting rid of new plants emerging from the bottom of the pot etc, and believe me that pot is a large and deep tub. |
