I'm cranky this time --parsley disappearing

Hi all
I wondered why my parsley plants were disappearing and I think my beloved dog has dug them up. I put them in a pot out in the sun and after the first two went absent I put some wire netting over them but lo and behold she's managed to still get into them. Either her or a bush turkey, and there isn't one left. Would I be better off with seeds? I like the thick curly parsley so is there a good fast growing variety you could recommend? They just seem to take so long. Os should I buy another punnet and put skedaddle around them. (It seemed to work for my bromiliads after that other dog got into them and tore their hearts out). I never thought my darling Carly would do that to me. Jan

| Buy more plants and put some chicken wire or similar around them. There's a superstition that says parsley will only do well if you are pregnant. And there's another that says the seed has to go to the devil 9 times and back before it will germinate! Also, if parsley grows well, a pregnancy will occur within a year. The wife also ‘wears the trousers’ Here's how to get parsley started. Pour boiling water over the seeds, and leave overnight before sowing. Sow seeds 5mm deep. Germination may also be hastened by freezing seeds briefly to help break dormancy. Germination may take several weeks. When transplanting, be careful not to damage the raproot. Parsley doesn't really like transplanting - best to sow in situ. |

Hi Jan, If the problem with your dog (or bush turkey) persists, how about growing some in a hanging basket...they surely won't be able to reach that! Cheers, Dee. |

When we lived in the city, we had some parsley growing near a fence and it too kept disappearing. One morning, my husband drove off to work at the usual time but I decided to take a sickie and stay home. A few minutes later, I saw the neighbour go to the fence and start to clip the parsley through the mesh, with household scissors...When she saw me appear on the backstairs, she got quite a scare!! Apparently, she needed some parsley for her rissoles and mine was so fresh and tasty... Needless to say, from then on we had beautiful and healthy parsley. |

| Can't see that planting seeds will make any difference, once they've grown you've got the same problem. Hanging it sounds like the best idea. |

| Hi all- I see that this is an old thread, but I'll add to it anyway. Same thing was happening to my parsley a few seasons back but they were in clay pots! Turned out that slugs were devouring them, stems included! What threw me was that no slime-trails were visible; guess the slugs didn't need them! Happy gardening! |
