Comments (1)Chives get aphids. And lots of them. Usually black ones. Beyond that, can you post a photo?...See MoreMore milkweed...and aphids?!!
Comments (22)Ha, Sherry will soon have so many names we won't be able to remember them all! :) I remember that my hollyhocks had so many holes in them last year too and I wondered what was eating them. I didn't see any Painted Lady or Common Checkered Skipper cats on them, but then again, that would almost be impossible since I never saw those kinds of butterflies here. Oh, I just can't wait to see what I get this year! Oh, Susan, did I tell you that I didn't know where to get a gas plant so I went ahead and ordered some seeds from that J.L. Hudson that you told me about. I just found out about a month (if that) ago that they don't bloom until the third year, and now I see on the pack that it says the seeds need cold treatment for 3-5 months. ARG! Now I'll have to wait even longer because they won't get planted outside until next spring, I guess. If I'd just chill them until the end of June, they would probably be big enough to plant in late August, I'm thinking, and that is pretty late to start plants up this far north. They wouldn't have much time to get going before we'd have a frost (early October). So I think I'll chill them for five months, which would be the end of September. Since they're technically seeds for the 2007 season, I wonder if they'd be any good if I waited until about next February to start them inside or if I should start them inside right after they're done chilling. Just thinking out loud...I don't know if anyone knows the answer to that one. Cathy Cathy...See MoreOT..In praise of Chives!
Comments (34)Ditto on the Chives, Donn I LOVE my garlic chives. They go into just about everything. Put them in tossed salad, they give them a great taste and look. Put them in potato salad...ditto. Put them in sauce or whatever I stir fry or as part of a marinade...yummm...and they just keep coming all season. I think I need to grow more. You know what else I like that I knew next to nothing about before I WSed it? Lovage. It tastes like a stronger version of celery and it is wonderful in chicken salad, nice in stews or tossed salads...You can use the leaves or the stalks and you just use less of it than celery (the flavor goes a long way). And it's perennial! Linda...See MoreOrganic Insect Control in the Home Landscape
Comments (2)Hi Dawna, Thanks for the kind words. I just wanted to put together a little info sheet for everyone because the pests are so bad this year, and everyone has had a lot of questions. It sure has been raining a lot up your way. I hope all is well there. At least we aren't having to worry about wildfires or a hay shortage this year. Flooding, however, may be this summer's big issue. Dawn...See MoreJennie60
