Coriander Problems

| My coriander plants have started to develop a purple-brown tinge to their leaves. Some of the plants are obviously dieing while others have started to bolt (? sign of impending death?). The oregano and rosmary in the same bed are doing just fine. North facing bed with full sun all day. Does get a bit of wind. They have been fed with liquid fertilizer and have had plenty of water over the dry spell. Any ideas would be much welcomed. |

| Hi redbank, it sounds like your coriander is heat stressed, maybe due to hot winds - I find that mine turns browny colors when I try to grow it in a pot over summer months. Bolting is one of the nuisance things about coriander, and they will go to seed at the slightest change in weather, water or conditions. As the majority of coriander in the past has been grown for seed and not leaf, this has always been a bonus for growers. Some newer varieties sold in seed paks are grown for leaf and say that they are 'slow to bolt'. I have heard that these too will bolt if stressed at all. The only solution that I can think of is to sow successive crops so that you have a good supply of leaf. Also cut off the developing seed heads to slow things down a bit. Hope Ive helped some. Cheers. |
