is anyone growing wormwood and making their own absynthe?

I've got the wormwood and I've got the recipes for absynth but I haven't got the guts to try and make it - - heard too many stories about it being halucinagenic, narcotic etc etc and it stunts your growth - just look at Toulouse Lautrec :-)

Wouldn't you need to ferment and then distill the alcohol in the presence of the wormwood to make it? It's neither easy nor legal to make a still. Maybe your recipes say different?

RE: wormwood

I do NOT recommend that anyone either make or use absinthe. It's downright dangerous stuff, and banned in many countries for very good reasons.

But, since you ask, and seem prepared to play with fire, check out these sites. You might have a useful brain now, but not after you've used it! Plenty of madhouses used to be filled with users of it.

Here is a link that might be useful: absinthe

daisyduckworth - hi - absynthe used to be banned in europe and australia, but is now available again - but very pricey.

jamus_s - stills to make alcohol are illegal, but up here in queensland we can legally buy a still "to purify water etc" - that's the line that the home brew shops use to sell the stills

here's acouple of links for steeped absynthe:

As for playing with fire - that's why I've asked here first - to see if anyone has made their own using wormwood.

hi paradisi - I was just reading the same article on erowid. Very interesting. I have done distillation before. I have been working in research in laboratories for the past 12 years, so have access to all sorts of equipment.

lol sounds like you too are up to NO good but i will be in on this to have a watch. I have nice bit of artemesia absinthinium growing a nice littl eplant my mother managed to pick up in her days as a hippy along with some other very inetersting (wink) plants which she grew. I always thought she looked happier comign back from the strawberry patch up the back. My father has done alot of distillery stuff or major companies for years now he is an Industrial Chemist for a title. If any advice is needed he should be able to help. Let me know if you need a 2nd opinion on things i will give you his number with his permission and I would like to know the outcome and keep in contact on this topic I am very inetersted in this experiment.

Cheers Bella
