Planting Garlic

Posted by Bowenlady Sth NSW Aust (My Page) on

Has anyone ever tried growing garlic from the tiny seeds of the flower heads? We grew some wonderful garlic from six ordinary garlic cloves that were sprouting in their jar (as they do!) and the flower heads that developed had these tiny little garlic cloves that I thought I'd try to plant out. Anyone ever tried this with any success?

Thanks for any feedback,
Anne-Marie

I have read a few times that garlic seed is not viable. I guess you will have to have a go at proving the literature wrong! Good luck and let us all know how you go.

Hi Anne-Marie,you've got was is known as topsetting garlic.
Plant these bulbils as you would normal cloves but they usually take 2 seasons to grow into decent sized garlic bulbs.
Hope that helps,
Kurt

Thank you for the encouragement, kolanda! I hope I can prove them wrong! Will let you know how I go.
Kurt - thanks for that info. I look forward to planting these 'babies' out and seeing what comes of them! I will wait till we have moved to our new house in March and get the new vege patch going... which will be a challenge in itself on a sloping block with clay soil!

Thanks again. :o)
