Hope everyone on the Sunshine Coast and other areas down south have been okay in the storms the last week or two.

Yes, it has been a bit full on everywhere hasn't it? Even down here in Melbourne we seem to be getting more that our usual share of thunderstorms. Is this the way it going to be now I wonder? It's great to get the rain, but could do without the winds and lightning.
Cheers,
Dee.

Virtually no rain here in Brisbane inner south. Lots of rain further north and south but we've been unlucky. Got a bit of rain this afternoon - haven't checked the rain gauge - guessing about 5ml. Just enough so I don't need to do night hosing, thank goodness.

Thats a shame treeluver here 32 kms south it heaved down at 5:30 and put 26mm in the rain gauge
Same thing again a little later, the gutters could not cope there was water everywhere what a waste.
As it travels down the slope into the back neighbours and then into the gutters.
I reckon we would have got 60mm EASY I will check in the morning.
Best rain we have had for months.........Cheers...MM,

g'day mm,

good to hear you getting some good rain at last, this is not wide spread rain as the storms are very small in dimension but also in the highly destructive range.

that run off water is what you need to stop so you have lots of water stored in your soil to minimise watering, in permaculture we do all things gardens, tree planting mulching along the contours to trap this water and put it under ground in the soil where it is needed. to maximise the benfits of rain fall water must be kept on your property as long as possible of course there are areas where it is boggy and this is not appropriate but for the main that is not so. working the rain water this way has turned our block around and given us a drought tollerant block as against others where no measures are taken to utilise scarce rainwater.

it all shows in the quality of plant and grazing grass growth.

The storms certainly are localised though. Yesterday afternoon we had 3mms as a storm went past but my husband who works about 4kms away said it poured down for at least half an hour and guessed that it was over an inch. The golf course, once again, had extra water hazards.

Treeluver, you certainly are unlucky when it comes to rain as my brother at Carindale has been having quite a bit of rain.

Hi there Len , our block is on a slope downwards and acrosswards to the back left hand side ( did you get that ) but we have done a lot to stop that water running away. I have thickly mulched across the middle of the back fence where the bamboo are growing thats stops a lot now and it sit there in the front of that garden soaking in, also put boxed veggie beds even that stops it.

In the chook yard where we get all the run off from the block on the right Tony has put these old concrete things in so it is like a dam that stops a lot running away but not all of it, we are still working on it thanks . But its the body Len with Tonys left shoulder frozen and my right one between us both we still cannot use a lot of the garden tools and old age is starting to catch up a bit. When reading the gauge this morning I find we only got 44mm not the 60 I though but a wonderful bonus all the same ..Cheers..MM.

Glad to hear all ok.
These forums have created me no end of stress.
Now I not only worry about friends and family in storms I now worry about garden webbers and their gardens as well.
I dream about large winds and hail destrying hundreds of beautiful plants and trees. Actually its a nightmare!

We had 10mls or so in the guage this morning, with all the thunder and lightning I thought there would be more.
We are getting bits and pieces now which is good. The first storms filled the dam and tanks and al this extra is for the garden and it is loving it.
We lost a large cottonwood tree in a storm while we were away and after three days of mulching we have a lovely pile of goodies , poor tree it was beautiful in flower.
I hope all your gardens are safe and not getting too battered with the hail I hear about down that way

14 mm on both Wednesday and Friday nights north of Rocky. Big bangs of thunder right over the house put one of the dogs I was sitting just about in my pocket. Think of the N that came down too!

Woo hoo, another 32 mm last night I hear (I'm back in Mackay). Ran the upper creek and therefore should up the level in our dam. A bit blowy but only took a few (borer ridden) branches off a poinciana. Dry as here. As my dh said the other day, Mackay is the new Bowen. Not for much longer we sure hope.

Thats great Rose, here we got another 8mm, more noise than anything we even got hail
But only small, thank goodness, the rain is very welcome but the damage isn't

RE: Storms on Sunshine Coast and elsewhere

At Dicky Beach we get the rain but seem to miss the high winds or hail (just rushing outside to touch some wood) Though if we do get a strong knockem down wind - the trees in the jungle behind us are a worry - most of them are tall enough to come through the lounge room if they do fall.

RE: Storms on Sunshine Coast and elsewhere

Glad to hear everyone has been okay with no major damage. As we missed most of the storms we are now getting very dry again. Plants are starting to wilt and the vegie gardens need watering most days. Some nice steady rain now would be good. Also hope that all you folks down south are safe from the bushfires and I hope you all get some good rain as well. Let us know how you're going.
