 o
2 questions please?

Posted by venice NSW Aust (My Page) on

Hi all,
I have only recently discovered the joys of successfully raising plants from seeds, after many, many heartaches.
Needless to say, I have many in stock and many on order, and hundreds of granny bonnets, straight from the garden.
So, my first question is:
What seeds, in general, do you folk sow in Summer (like right now?)
2nd question:
My pigfaces have thousands of pods on 'em. I'd like to harvest them but have no idea how to, and if it's viable to raise them from seed.
Would most appreciate any input.
Kindest regards to all,
Venice

RE: 2 questions please?

Hi I reckon seed sowing is a climate thing.
Too hot in my backyard, where you live may be cooler.
Pig face, I just break off bits and plant them, so easy.
Cheers..MM.

I have never known anyone to grow pig face from seed. I agree with MM. Cuttings are way simpler....doesn't mean you can't try though.
Cheers,
Dee.

RE: 2 questions please?

if the pig face pods are the edible type - why not eat them instead? or make jam out of them??

 o
RE: 2 questions please?

Thankyou, you 3 nice people, for your suggestions. Jam is out of the question, don't like any jams. And yes, I grow 100's of cuttings of pigface, but just wanted the challenge of growing them from seed. Fortunately, in the meantime, I've discovered a great site with details on how to grow practically anything from seed, so today I've been plodding around, taking seedheads from everything in sight! Please have a lovely Xmas. Cheers, Venice

Hi Venice, care to share the site you found? Happy Christmas everybody!

RE: 2 questions please?

Hi Venice, I dont mind pigface, but i get a little put off by the sight of so much pink here and there. Eveyone has the same colour figface planted in ther garden. you know that you can get varieations when you grow from seed and who knows you might come up with a new colour. Keep the dream alive and grow from seed, or be like everyone else and grow from cuttings growing the same old colours. Bazil.

RE: 2 questions please?

Hi Bazil, Thanks for your words of encouragement. The pigfaces I grow aren't the thickleaved variety that just spread and spread. They come in yellows, whites, crimsons, gold, orange, pinks, etc. I don't think the seeds will come true, as do the cuttings, but it's a challenge, eh? I sent Danielkemp the site for seeds, but it must've just gone to him privately, so here it is for all to share: http://theseedsite.co.uk/seedpods.html Needless to say, I'm a seed fanatic now, and take much joy in just walking through the garden (ok, the mess!) and shaking seeds out of pods and enveloping them all. A couple of weeks' back, I shook out about 1000 seeds from one little black aquilegia plant and sowed some of them. Guess what? They're up and thriving! Then my sil visited from Balaklava (yes, Balaklava, Calthorpe (?????can't remember your exact name but she may have well have taught your kids in primary school) and tore up all the Sweet Williams' dying plants, grabbed the seeds, and enveloped them. To cut a long story short, Bazil, I have around 50 packets of seeds to sow come Autumn (Oh God Not Now, it's 40 degrees in the shade here today). So yes, I'm 'trying' to keep the dream alive. Cheers, Venice
