PH Preferences list

| Could someone please recommend an Australian Web Site or a book about Soil PH.Especially the PH preferences of shrubs I have googled, but plants such as Escallonia, are not listed.I already have the holes dug for three Escallonia Iveyi and the soil PH is 5.0 very acidic. Do you know if they like high acid or should I adjust the PH with Dolomite Lime. This is my first attempt at preparing the soil to suit the plants PH preference. Thank you for any much needed advice. |

Nemo Somewhere in my vast library of garden books or magazines, I know there is a table of pH preferences of different plants but I cannot qute locate it. It may be in the CSIRO booklet on Soil but can't find that either. However I cannot recall ever reading about Escallonias being overly fussy about pH, unlike azaleas, rhododendrons, lavender etc. So a range of 5.5 to 6.5 would probably be fine. Yes, add dolomite but more importantly keep up the water in Summer. I lost my first Iveyi and i think it was due to the imported soil having no ability to hold water. My next one is thriving and is about 1.4 metres tall but I do try to ensure it doesn't dry out in hot weather. Whilst some plants can be fussy about pH, many books suggest that pH is generally less critical than some people may think. |
