Ants in my pants...sorry Pots!

Posted by DAVO_QLD QLD AUST (My Page) on

I seem to have ongoing problems with ants invading my pots in the greenhouse.

Can anybody please give me some suggestions which will knock the ants off but not harm my plants.

Sounds like the bottom of your pots are too dry. Sometimes when you water from the top the water just runs through and doesn't wet all the soil properly.
You might try submerging them in a bucket of water for a good soak when they need watering. Or perhaps they need repotting?

Hi David, a half hour or so soak in a solution of one part orange oil based cleaner and three parts water should take care of anything living in that soil. My understanding is that houseplants, as opposed to plants in the garden, do not really benefit much from organisms living in their soil. HTH

I've heard that you add Condes Crystals to a bucket of water so that it is the palest of pinks then add your pot and let it soak for a bit.

try surrounding the base of your plants with plain old baby powder - most ants can't cross the powder so they end up starving them selves in (or out)
