Best frost protection

I have just moved to an area which recorded -6c last winter following a fortnight of continuous frost and cold south westerlies. I am planting a number of shrubs and trees some of which are frost tolerant but the others will burn when young. I am wondering if hessian and "Envy" would be the best protection. Any suggestions? Thanks, Leah.

RE: Best frost protection

If it were me, I'd plant out only the frost-tolerant trees/shrubs. When they have grown enough to form a protective canopy, then I would plant the more sensitive plants under their shelter.

Note that even frost-tolerant plants might need some protection while young, whether that's hessian or a protective spray. I wouldn't trust either of these measures to work on the sensitive plants: (1) the spray simply mightn't be enough (or might even burn the leaves of the sensitive plants); (2) the hessian would have to go out every cold night, and it would be too easy to miss one night.
