chinese elm but small?

Hi there - i am looking for a small tree with a nice rounded canopy for my front garden, i dont want anything that grows higher than 3 or 4 Metres. I saw a beautiful Chinese Elm at a nursery a while back but was told they grow 10 to 20 metres tall! Does anyone know of a deciduous tree that would look similar to a chinese elm but more in my height range?

You could try a white cedar, Melia azederach, it is a native tree, one of the rare deciduous. Nice flowers. Not sure how high it gets, maybe they have some cultivars.

Hope you didn't buy that Melia they grow to be at least 7 -10 metres high and when mature they are subject to wind damage. sometimes half the tree can fall away. Certainly not suitable for a town garden.

There are not too many trees this small you are really looking for a tall shrub. Smallest trees would be a crepe myrtle, or japanese maple (this would have to have shade). You could prune a large shrub to one stem perhaps, eg cotinus or photinia. Perhaps a silk tree would be an option or a trident maple. Flowering fruit trees could also suit your needs depending on your climate.
