Daylillies poisonous to cats

My Dad told me a few months ago that he read an article about how some daylillies can be lethal if ingested by cats. He told me because we have a beautiful pedigree ragdoll cat and I had just planted a couple of daylillies in our backyard.

I shrugged off his concerns as our cat is a predominantly inside cat and is always with the family and supervised in the back yard. Also because I know cats have a certain intuition and tend not to ingest things that may harm them.

However to my shock and horror this morning while wandering around in the garden, I turned to see my gorgeous cat chewing happily away on the daylilly leaves... Now I'm paranoid that he's going to get sick!

Can anyone tell me which daylillies are the ones to be concerned about, and how I can distinguish them from the harmless varieties? I'm pretty sure the one we have is harmless, but I just want to be on the safe side.

Thanks
Ange

Hi Ange I did a bit of Googling and have come up with this link so have a read.
More links on that link too and very interesting maybe its best the cat stays indoors after reading it.
I am a dog person myself, but I was interested all the same as I never knew these things either.
Hope it helps........Cheers..MM.

That is interesting.
Now I am wondering if they are poison to rabbits as well as my daylillies are the first port of call for them when they get past out little dog Reggie.

Liliums are LETHAL to cats, if they eat the foliage. Daylilies are NOT. Every part of the daylily can be eaten.
I think the biggest problem with such information is the lack of use of botanical names. I see much confusion even on these forums between daylilies, liliums and calla lilies. The common name lily covers such a huge spectrum of diverse plants.
Interestingly, it is LILIUMS that one is most likely to have in a vase indoors, foliage plus flowers. Very few people would bother putting together such an arrangement of daylilies.
Marion - your bunnies are safe munching on your daylilies - more's the pity :-)

Ange
I couldn't find anything in a brief search to say if there are varying degrees of toxicity amongst members of the lily family. But it seems daylily is a true lily (yes?) and you are right to be concerned. Think a call/ visit to your vet sooner rather than later might be wise. Cats aren't little people, or lttle dogs, as some vets say.
Sorry Marion, I did see that rabbits show no toxic affects.
All the best for your cat

Hi, Mistymorn
Indeed daylilies seem to be toxic to cats... a google on hemerocallis poisonous cats came up with over 500 entries. Who would have thought... I knew that lilies were toxic but I thought that Hemerocallis were safe as both the flowers and the new tuber are edible - for humans!

Might as well give up gardening!
I recently read in a gardening Australia Mag, that onions are poisonous to cats. A cat that ingests something like 2 whole onions may die from the experience. Hmmm - anyone tried to feed onion to cats?
I had a hard time finding articles about hemerocallis toxicity, and given that most daylily books claim that every part of the daylily is edible, I think you would be highly unlikely to lose a cat from daylily poisoning, unless you force fed it on daylily leaves.

I'm with Sparaxis. I don't think Hemerocallis are toxic to cats. It's probably misinformation. The internet is rife with it.

RE: Daylillies poisonous to cats

hi ange, this is from the hunter valley rescue site below

"Particularly dangerous are Dieffenbachia
(Dumb Cane or Leopard Lily), Lilium longiflorum (Easter Lily) and some other members of the Lilium and Hemerocallis family."

it might be best to contact your vet and see what they say.

rose is right in that dogs and cats arent the same as people and some things that we could eat can be really harmful to animals, e.g. chocolate can be toxic for dogs and they can only handle a certain amount of it.

aparently some types of lillies can cause kidney failure in cats, so please check with your vet and good luck with puss

RE: Daylillies poisonous to cats

My dog was severly poisoned by lillies in my garden - unfortunately I was new to gardening at the time, and so I can't be certain what variety it was, but I think it was a lilium. So yes dogs are affected too. The symptoms were very similar to a paralysis tick: lethargy, difficulty standing etc. This was a 30kg labrador so you can assume the toxin is fairly strong. Luckily she survived, but only after a very close call ... and very large vet bill!

Ange,

I hope your cat is okay. I guess we have to assume that there is some danger in the day lily for cats but unfortunately there are probably many other plants that are just as (if not more) toxic in our gardens.

I grow a pot of ordinary grass for my cat to chew on when she comes outside occasionally. She loves having a munch on it and my Jack Russell enjoys it too. They seem less likely to chew on other things if a suitable option is available.

Cheers,
Dee.

RE: Daylillies poisonous to cats

Both cats and dogs need grass to eat so as Dee says grow some pots of grass and catnip, etc for your cat to chew on and they are less likely to eat the wrong thing.

Ragdolls are beautiful cats. I have a half ragdoll/half common tabby and she is a really loving cat.

RE: Daylillies poisonous to cats

Well it's been about 2 weeks now since Caspurr had his munchers around my day lily and he's fine. Seems a lot slower and lazier (if that's possible) but I'm guessing that is the heat that has hit Perth like a ton of bricks. Poor thing hasn't had a chance to shed his winter coat yet and he's spending all day every day sprawled on his back under the ceiling fan!

After reading a couple of the links you all kindly gave me I went and inspected the plant closely and couldn't see any missing leaves or tooth marks so I think he must have just been playing with the plant. He was sitting at the base of the plant watching me hang washing out, I think if the wind had moved the leaves he would have half heartedly grabbed one in his mouth then let it go. He's a bit half arsed when it comes to playing lol.

Anyway, thankyou all so much, Caspurr is fine but I won't be heading off to Bunnings this weekend to get one of their beautiful Liliums... I love liliums they are so beautiful, but I love my cat more :)

Cheers

Ange

Daylillies poisonous to cats?

Good to see that they are good for something! If they clean up a few ferals (which includes neighbours straying cats who kill wildlife) who cares!

 o
RE: Daylillies poisonous to cats

Hmmm, well mine is an inside cat and only goes outside supervised with us (and as you can see by the picture) he's often on a leash so no wildlife for my fur ball (unless you count cockroaches and the occassional cricket!!

I have spoken to my vet who has said a cat would have to consume almost a whole day lily plant for it to be toxic, and to be more careful of oleander which would kill cats, dogs, birds, children... anyone who consumed any part of it.

RE: Daylillies poisonous to cats

hi ange, a beautiful cat you have there :)

there's lots of plants which are poisonous to pets but it's only a worry if your pet shows any interest in eating them. I have oleander growing and my dogs have never showed the slightest bit of interest in it so it doesnt worry me at all. you did the right thing by checking with the vet after seeing your cat nibbling on it. I like the suggestion above of planting something for puss to have a nibble on that's safe because animals do like to have something like that around to help them if they get a build up of bile in their stomach which they usually do from time to time.

glad to hear muffin is feeling well!
