I need some Scare Crow Advice about Colours.

Sight of the week::: I seen a little while ago a Big Black Crow fly into the chook yard and pinch one of the new chooks eggs its second egg actually, its a bit young and has not worked out that the nest is for laying not the ground. I though putting a golf ball in the nest would help but it has not cotton on to that idea yet.

So now hubby is down his shed making this huge scarecrow its about 5ft tall he has stuffed it with my Sugar Cane Mulch and dressed it in a pair of black track pants, and a black leather jacket, Looks more like a Bikee now what I need to know is "Is Black OK" or should he dress it in something brighter to scare it away if that is possible. And what other kind of decoration can we put on it to make it look more gruesome as its our very first Scarecrow. Looking forward to lots of very interesting ideas...Cheers..MM.

PS When I went down to take a Pic it had started to rain so now the Scarecrow has a plastic bag over it, doesn't look too scarey to me.

Perhaps a red suit with white fur trim. It would suit the belly and the season!
(sorry, but I don't really have any constructive advice)

Do you have any old CD's or alfoil pie plates or even pretty coloured scarfs to dingle frim his hands, anything to make it move and rustle a bit.
Problem is all your lovely friendly little birds will not like it either.
Crows are smart and will soon work out he is not going to do anything to him.
You may need to put some light netting across the top of the chook run.

g'day mm,

for the scare crow to work you need to keep changing it's position see if hubby can add motions like a moving arm. also seen lots made from shopping bags as the move a lot it the wind and make a noise. maybe change the hat often.

another suggestion that came to me once was using tinsel the bright red, orange golden colours.

Thanks everyone, well that crow came for a visit this morning and the noisy miners chased it away.
I dont think it even got a look at that scarecrow as it came overtop from the tall palms next door
Great ideas I will tell the boss and he will work on it..Cheers..MM.

I remember reading once that the eyes are the most important part. You can buy those black and white wobbly eyes at craft shops. I have no idea if it really makes any difference.
Cheers,
Dee.

I criss-cross fishing line over the chook pen, though it is 7ft high, the crows don't see it and try to fly in and hit the line. It doesn't seem to hurt them just gives them a rough landing so they go somewhere else. Works for chicken hawks as well.

My father used to do this too. He also used to put rat traps on the roof, not set, but the crows didn't know that. Another thing he stumbled on was when he sprinkled some powdered lime around the pen (apparently deters lice) the crows didn't come anywhere near the place.

The new black chook laid another small egg today on the ground so that Crow did not get it.
I also found out why the Crow was coming for dinner seems hubby had been putting food out
For the maggie and her two or was it three babies, on the chook house roof of all places.
He wont do that again, Thanks Dee the eyes a terrific idea. And GH I like your ones too.
Cheers..MM.
