Hello,

We planted three crowns of Rhubard this Spring. Everything seemed to be going well until two of the crowns sprung a seed shoot i.e. went to seed. We are woundering what could have caused this and whether the solution is to simply cut of the flowering shoot and add some nitrogen fertilizer?

RE: Rhubarb

Hi John, to be really productive rhubarb needs humus rich, neutral to slightly acidic, good water retentive soil and full sun. Premature flowering like you described is usually a stress response, perhaps not enough water? You are probably right when you say high nitrogen fertiliser as nitrogen promotes leafy vegetative growth. Cow or sheep manure is the best fertiliser for Rhubarb. Do what you suggested, make sure the soil is rich enough and the plant should pick up. I would dig it up, make a large hole, 2ft deep and 3ft wide, fill the hole with compost and cow manure/sheep manure, mix some of the original soil back into the hole to create a slightly raised area, create a drepression in this and plant the rhubarb smack in the middle. Water it in deeply and Bob's your uncle. All the best. :)
