Smoke woods

I'm interested in growing a few trees with timber suitable to use in barbeques as smoke wood such as hickory, oak and mesquite. If anyone has had experience with any of these I would be happy to hear about their successes, failures or general advice.

You might have to wait a while! I hot smoke fish, seafood etc with rice, tea and sugar - you just have to buy it!
Oak in particular would take a long time to grow, but apple or other fruit trees is also a nice smoke wood. You get to eat the fruit as well!

I can't help thinking that an oak tree that was to be felled for timber would attract a way higher price from furniture makers and wood turners, than would justify burning the timber for smoking food.
