I have 3 Gardenias,2 are black and have scale [which are green in colour] the other is ok. How can I get rid of both problems? They are in full sunshine and are all watered with the water from our treatment plant.

The black is a sooty mould that develops after the scale have damaged the plant. You can get rid of the scale with spray, but the black tends to stay unless you actually rub it off. There's no reason you can't do exactly that. But I'm not that patient - after your next prune, new growth will cover it anyway. There's lots of different sprays out there such as white oil for the scale. A simple and cheap homemade version is about 4 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a 2 litre sprayer, with a squirt of dishwashing liquid to make the mix sticky, helping it cling to the plants. I used that earlier this year and it did the job well. Not sure why just 2 of the 3 are affected, but it is probably just where the little critters landed and like their surroundings. Either way, hopefully this will work and it's bye bye suckers!

Hi, I get rid of the black sooty mould by spaying with soapy water then hosing the plant after a few days. The black comes off easily and I have found that the plants have not been damaged at all by the soapy water. GH
