pruning photinia's

| I have planted what will one day, fingers crossed, be a hedge of photinia robusta. They were planted in Feb of this year and pruned shortly afterwards. They have grown a fair bit and I was wondering how often I should prune them as I would like them to thicken up |

You can prune them almost as often as you like, they don't seem to mind. To make a good thick hedge, often and little is always a good rule. They really are one of the toughest hedges you can grow. Cheers, Dee. |

"To make a good thick hedge, often and little is always a good rule." I agree. A couple of things I try to be aware of now is not to prune when the birds are nesting in case I remove too much shelter for their nests and not to prune just before flowering if you want the flowers. As for severe pruning, that always makes me nervous, but I have done it and I have seen other people's photinia hedges come back really well after a good prune. |
