Second Question - Burnt Ground

Posted by Larsman Gold Coast (yangdude@hotmail.com) on

I have made a couple of big fires on my block over the years (I thought the residue charcole was supposed to be good for something or other) and the ground where the fires were seems to be really barren. I'm thinking I need to plow it up and add some organic soil to get stuff growing there again. Any better ideas?

When you burn woody material you get ash and ash is VERY alkaline (in the olden days people used wood ash and oil to make soap). Best way is to test the soil and neutralise these spots if it is alkaline. I would use natural products like cow manure, pine/casurina needles or leaves.

Also I think a hot slow fire cooks the soil, killing the helpful organisms. Breaking up the suface and applying lots of organic matter - as you said - should fix that. Thinking of a liberal inclusion of cow/ chook manure too. pH test kit essential I think.

At least it killed the weed seeds :)
