WOW... ! So many people from all over Australia . I am sure there will be many more to post a message yet . Perhaps everyone would like to add something about your garden or any other interest that you have.

Somthing of interest ......yep go to it

I have just got back from Mackay, Gee that place is sure growing into a big city. The new Botanical Gardens.. ( Lagoon street) there on the southside , very good and well worth a trip to see . There is new work being done so I guess in a few months the whole gardens will take on a bigger and exciting character.

RE: Where do we live

Hi Everyone, We are now living at De Bay. I'm a bit sad that everyone calls it Depression Bay (Deception for those who haven't heard of it , so I have christened it 'De Bay'. You know, 'sittin' on de dock o' de Bay' etc etc.We love it here, not in the old part but not in the newest estates either and a good sea breeze which was the attraction. Redcliffe was just too expensive. For what we have, we would have had to pay another $100,000 in Redcliffe. gardenlen, you'll be sad to leave your country estate, I hope you'll soon settle in down this way. Cheers everyone.

RE: Where do we live

Im currently living in Townsville, but soon to return home to Darwin where I was born and raised. I spent 6 months in Hobart last year and as incredibly beautiful as Tasmania is I dont know how people can live in cold climates. I am a tropical person and love tropical gardening, though I am no fan of palms - messy bloody things...
Bindii are we related?????

 o
RE: Where do we live

Well I was born in Townsville FFOB, and had 1 1/4 acres of Bindii but its not in my name, went back many years later after living in Melbourne for 45 years. I am currently living 32kms south of Brisbane on a 3/4 acre block its a lovely area, though sometimes when we dont see rain for up too five months I yearn for the North Eastern suburbs of Melbourne but hubby does not like the cold, strange for someone who was born in Wales UK you would think he would be used to it, he likes the weather here and I must admit I do too most of the time. The one thing I do not like is the soil on this block as it is so hard to grow things but I am getting there.
I do hope everyone is Happy in their own piece of Paradise...Cheers..MM.

RE: Where do we live

I live in Brisbane 12 Klm's from CBD in Western Suburbs. Very green leafy area of the world. We bought this house and it had no garden. In 2 years we have built a pool and largely transformed the garden.
I was born in Freemantle, then lived in Brisbane, Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Darwin, Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and now back to Brisbane. This is all by the age of 35. Brisbane will be my home till I go out in a cardboard box. I love it most of all those cities.
We have recently purchased a hobby farm at Marburg, only 200 acres and we are going to rent our Brisbane home and live on the farm for a while as it is close enough to commute to Brisbane. I have retired from Nursing and never intend to set foot into a hospital again.
I want to become self sufficiant, So that is my area of study at the moment.

 o
RE: Where do we live

I live on a farm in the Riverina region of NSW, 60km north of the Murray River and 110 km north west of Albury (by road). The majority of my garden is only four years old, and very open to the elements, as we enjoy looking at the view beyond our garden. I have over 300 roses and they seem to thrive in lots of sunshine. We have access to an irrigation scheme, so we can get water to fill the dam in very dry times. Ann

Hi, folks. I am in Freo, maybe a km from the beach- facing the ocean, sand is my soil, and lots of arvo sun. Tricky spot, but grow a few natives and a few hardy herbs. Lots of shade from trees. Houseplants up the side of house and lots of tubs for frogs and tadpoles.

 o
RE: Where do we live

50k south of Perth, 600 metres from the beach on what was once sand dunes - complete with shells. It was also once an army artillery range so I hope that there are no other sorts of shells still here!!! Some 3000 years ago we were out to sea!

Reinnervation: Restoration of nerve function after it has been lost. Reinnervation may occur spontaneously or be achieved by nerve grafting.
I just somehow thought that wasn't what the person meant - but I could be wrong.

RE: Where do we live

What a great post. So much variety. I'm in Don Valley which is in the Yarra Valley appx 65 kms east of Melbourne. Stones throw from the yarra river and beautiful soil that loves plants nearly as much as I do. Sometimes can get a bit damp for my roses however starting to diversify a little nowadays anyway. Very very green 99% of the year which is the way I love it. Although I used to be a beach and hot weather buff which is only reserved for holidays now...

Hi everyone, I live in Donnybrook which is about 200 or so km south of Perth. I'm renting an early 1900s house so the garden has all sorts of surprises, even 18 months after moving in there's still new things popping up. I also spend a bit of time at my partners place, 26 acres about 20km from my place. Its full of fruit trees and an assortment of other plants.
We're very spoilt as there's state forest over the road and a waterfall about 400m away so we spend heaps of time searching for our beautiful WA wildflowers especially the orchids, oh, thats fit in between halter training the weanling alpacas next door, and next year it will be my own 'pacas that will be having cria (babies) that will need halter training. I can't wait!

Bye for now, Jules the new 'paca breeder.

Hi everyone, I live in Adelaide, about 5km NE of the CBD. My garden is about 6 years old, and the soil is clay, clay and more clay! I live with a four-legged hooligan (otherwise known as Ashke the 12 mth old German Shepherd, who likes to chew pergola posts in his spare time lol) and several gold fish.

My front garden is cottage style, and I'm currently having a battle with what seems like thousands of snails. The back and side gardens are a mix of lawn (for the hooligan and the nieces/nephews) garden and vegie beds, and a shade garden (ie jungle) down the side, which currrently looks like a prison camp due to the wire fence enclosure to prevent the dog from destroying (yet again) my birds nest ferns/impatiens/calla lilies/hellebores/tree ferns/etc!!

 o
RE: Where do we live

Well as some of you already know, i live at Gunns Plains, Tasmania (about 30 minute drive from where the 'Spirit of Tasmania' docks). Married with no children and we purchased 50 acres 4 years ago which we have always intended to make as self-sustainable as our budget and luxuries allow! We're on solar power, have fruit trees, veggie garden and yesterday we started to erect one of our glasshouses (which i'm very excited about!) Getting there!

We have had the privilege of meeting a few fellow Tasmanian 'Garden Web posters' which has been fantastic - thanks GW!!

Cheers

RE: Where do we live

Hi
What an interesting thread!
We are all in different locations.
I am in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne,Victoria.
When we bought the house,we had to bulldoze the garden then started from scratch.Trees, bushes everything went so we started from a lunar landscape. Its taken a long time and lots of $$$$
We now have a rose garden and rose beds with new soil etc.The work is still on- going and will be for a while.
Love the cold/cool climate and love the winters.
Cheers

RE: Where do we live

Hmm let me redeem my 2 word post with a little introduction.
I'm a new member, i don't have a garden but i do cultivate some plants at the 2 houses i stay one in Concord (house with no garden when i arrived) and one in western suburbs in St Johns Park (house with just potted plants). Been living in australia since.. 5 yrs old. and now im 23. I love this place because there aren't many people that can relate to gardening in my age group.... let me say the young generation just isn't interested or understand the importance of cultivating plants which is a pity. Like most other males i do enjoy my childish share of video games and modern tech gadgets. even though im young i do know how to cultivate my plants well (the ones I've got anyway), however im always learning and this place always offer new tips and info for me. I know many of yous are older and more experienced and i look forward to sharing your gardening experiences. :P

Cheers

Hi everyone

I am in the upper north of Sydney, on the edge of bush. Nice national park rugged sandstone bush. My garden is this too. A little different, I call it extreme gardening, or adventure gardening. Almost everything I do involves a steep slope with soil, mulch, plants and even my two year old son tumbling down the hill to the street below.
We were city slickers a year ago, apartment dwellers whose gardenening extended to pots of herbs on the deck. I am loving the new experience of gardening, including this forum.
cheers

 o
RE: Where do we live

Andrea,

Extreme Gardening Andrea, this I have not heard of before but it is certainly a interesting thought. I say this because a garden is not a garden if it is dull and boring. Gardeners must keep one thing in mind, the whole garden must be exciting and interesting . This will drive people who visit the garden to rush into the garden with enthusiasm to see what is new , what is interesting, what is eye catching - a plethora of colour what is, maybe, a little bit eccentric .The whole garden must be alive and "happening" There are many ways to achieve a interesting garden . I say it again a dull or boring garden is not really a garden

My thoughts ...the thought of an "extreme garden" might just "do it " yes I wish I could chat to you more about your garden it sounds interesting a new concept .......tell us more about it.
It has me intrigued concerning the slope facing southwards .

I'm from Leonay NSW (about 50km west of Sydney). Leonay is in the foothills of the Blue Mountains National Park, on the western side and the eastern side is the Nepean River. Tiny, pretty little suburb (about 2500 people) named after Leo Buring who owned all the land that is now Leonay. He was a winemaker and the area used to be his vineyard. The soil consists of a mixture of shale and clay.

Hi all, I live in Central NSW about 4 hours from Sydney. We built a house about 7 years ago in the middle of a paddock and have established some gardens and planted quite a few trees and we still see every weed known to man popping their heads up from time to time.We have also endured a few years of drought, no doubt like everyone else. We also planted an olive grove, so spend time looking after that as well. We all love being out of town, the kids ride horses, kick soccer balls and generally make as much noise as they possibly can ( no neighbours to complain!)

RE: Where do we live

I am in Mosman in Sydney, in an apartment block with a garden that survived the development of the block. Wonderful established trees, sandstone terraces and paths, and residents' plant surprises. My balcony is a jungle of fuschias, a frangipani, Cecile Brunner rose, Bay tree, herbs, and native violet.

 o
RE: Where do we live

I'm a Sydney girl born and bred, but now live in the Upper Blue Mountains. We moved here in '99, built a timber house, (painted, I don't like brown), and set about establishing a garden. Part of my garden is all Australian plants. I know it's fashionable to mix natives with exotics, but I keep them separate and tell people it's because I don't want to spoil the natives. I get some odd looks when I say that to some people.
The improvements to the motorway have meant Sydney is getting closer, at least on the week-ends. Last Saturday we left here at 8 am and were sipping coffee by the Harbour at 9.10. Funny thing though, the Harbour and the Bridge look a lot smaller now than they did when I was little girl, but I love them just the same.

RE: Where do we live

I'm about a 40 minute bike ride from Hobart with 10 acres including 30 fruit trees and 400 square metres of veges so far.

 o
RE: Where do we live

11 acres out of Ballarat. Fruit trees, huge vegie garden and 1000s of decidious trees.

Have gardened all over Australia, including Darwin, Tennant Creek, Alice Springs, Rockhampton, NW of WA, Perth and Orange in NSW. After all that we decided we like the cool climate, so we came here.

 o
RE: Where do we live

What Robyn said, only a bit further out, a bit less land, much less gardening all over Australia, and 1000's fewer deciduous trees :-)
3 nice "Robyn Grown" Pinky roses in bloom here too!

RE: Where do we live

I live in Brisbane SW near the Moggill Ferry. I have spent many years in the Army so have started gardens everywhere we have been posted. Now I am establishing my garden for ME (flowers, veges, natives....) and if I get my way I will leave here in a box.

Best wishes everybody! Daniel

Well how are we all today? now that the elections are over and everyone is settleing down again .I don't think it will make much difference to the gardeners as our water supply is still dependent upon the skies and not the premier. If we are short of rain there is not much anyone can do about it .
