| I recently planted a new day lily. As far as I knew it was a run of the mill type. It has remained exceptionally small and is now in bud in proportion with the small thin leaves. My question; is there a miniature day lily, or is mine just stunted for some reason? It looks really healthy.

| Hi Dee I have a small Day Lily also its yellow and even the flower is a different shape. I got it from Bulbs Express when they were call that, it also has smaller leaves. | Thanks MM. Mine hasn't opened yet. It is in very early bud still. I really don't mind if it stays so little. I think it'll be quite cute really. It's hard to say if it's the same size as yours from the photo. Mine is only about 22cm. high including flower stalk. Does that sound about the same as yours? Cheers, Dee. |

| Yes, there are some very tiny ones. I saw one at the local markets that wouldn't have been more than 6 inches (15cm), and that included the blooms! Stella D'oro stays fairly small, and produces blooms over a very long period. The plant that is sold as Stella Bella I believe is marginally taller, and I saw on in the nursery yesterday by the name of Gold something-or-other that could easily pass as either of the above. It seems fairly pointless to me to bother introducing a plant variety that is not unique in some way, but to each his own, I guess. |

| I have both Stella D'oro and Stella Bella (which I don't think is a registered variety?) and love them both. They increase quickly, bloom prolifically, and make great hedgeing plants. My 2 year old Stella Bella plant when divided gave me 20 plants in total, all as good as you get in a pot at the nurseries, for 8.95. So for my 2 year investment of $6.95 X 2 = roughly $14 stick it in the ground and do nothing then get 20 plants from it valued at 8.95 = a bit less than $180 worth. Thats a fairly good rate of interest methinks! It is certainly not invasive (here), and as Dee says, very cute. Dee - there is no such thing as a "run-of-the-mill" daylily :-) They come in quite a range of sizes, heights, flower colour, pattern, size and shape. Worth filling your garden, or at least filling in the gaps that don't have irises and roses :-) As far as not registering plants that are similar to ones already on the market, there is much more to be considered than flower. One of the above is dormant and the other not. The 2 flowers are fairly different in colour, and the leaf form is slightly different. I would happily house another 6 or so similar, but subtly different variations of the same in my garden. |

| Thanks for the info Sparaxis. I think when I said run of the mill, I really meant common variety. I was aware of different varieties, but had never come across miniature ones before. It is funny that it wasn't labelled as such. Do the miniature ones come in other colours? Cheers, Dee. |

| Hi Dee I have one called Tiny Pumpkin (or is it Little Pumpkin? - something like that anyways). that too is a pretty little miniture - it is a pale orange shade, as it's name suggests. I have only had it one season and it is about to flower. It's leaf size and clump size is much smaller than many of my other day lillies - and judging by it's name - I guess it is meant to be pretty little or tiny. cheers - Rach |

| I have a miniature day lily, it is a named variety which I bought from a daylily specialist, but the name tag has gone missing. It's had a couple of flowers on over the last couple of weeks but not flowering at the moment. It is a pale orange/yellow (light pumpkin? shade) with a deep maroon eye and slightly frilled edges, similar to MM's stunning one. I did have another one but it disappeared, I suspect the dogs enjoyed it! |
