Tropical Magnolias

Hi all,
Im just wondering if anyone knows if there are any varieties of Magnolia that will do OK in Townsville. I recently went to Canberra and just fell in love with them so I want to see if I can grow them here. I have the port wine magnolia which just doesnt seem to cut it - I would like to try something with the big goblet flowers.
If anyone has any suggestions they would be much appreciated.
Happy gardening!

I'd suggest Magnolia grandiflora (very large tree) or Magnolia grandiflora 'Little Gem' for a smaller version (height to around 4m). Both are evergreen and have large white flowers with a divine lemon perfume. They grow well here in Brisbane. I also have a M. soulangeana (deciduous) but it doesn't do as well as these. Hope this helps.

Hazel.

Have you thought of Michelias. They are very similar, in fact I think they have hybridised the two. Michelia champaca and M. doltsopa will grow in your area. They have a spectacular scent and are used in perfumes.

Thankyou for you advice - I went to a few local nurseries to source these things but was told that Little Gem would not grow here and one lady even laughed at me when I asked for one.... As far as Michelias I was told that only the Port Wine michelia would grow here and that the others wouldnt do very well. I was then walking my dogs through a local public garden and saw 6 huge trees all labelled Michelia champaca covered in knobbly weird looking fruit! So who can you believe what you are told in nurseries? I will be keepiing my eye on those fruit so if any one can help me with advice on growing them it would be great!
Thanks again.
