Growing avocados in Ipswich?

| I was told that while avocados would grow in Ipswich, they wouldn't bear fruit. (Apparently because of the extreme summer heat rather than the extreme cold night temps in winter.) Is this true? If so, is there any variety that, with as good a microclimate as possible in the cirumstances, might have a chance of bearing fruit in the area? |

Haven't grown them myself but see no reason why you couldn't grow them. The main thing to remenber is their rather peculiar pollination requirements. There are two types, A and B, and you need one of each to get fruit. It has to do with timing - i.e., when the pollen is available and when the flowers are receptive to pollen. This is not necessary in cool climates as the plant's timing gets confused and they will self-pollinate. Your local nursery should be able to help with the best varieties for your area. Just make sure you get an A type and a B type and that they are compatible. By the way, the trees are quite big so placement needs careful consideration. Here are a few snippets from Loius Glowinski's book that might prove useful: Good drainage is essential as is protection from heavy frost. They are thin barked when young so if exposed to hot summer sun, paint the trunk white. They are shallow rooted so protect from wind and mulch well. Hope this little bit helps. Ray |

| Avocados will produce fruit in your climate, just follow Ray's advice re two varieties. They fruit in Perth and we often get 40 and over degrees in summer. |
