Whatever happened to Woodbank Nursery in Tassie?

Posted by davevallejo (My Page) on

Hi all,

Years ago, I visited a wonderful nursery in Tassie (at Longley, I believe), called Woodbank Nursery.

I can't seem to get any information on it these days that isn't over 4 years old.

Does anyone know the details of what happened? Namely, are they still in business (and if so, do they have a web catalogue/email)? Have they moved to another site? Did it get sold to someone else (e.g. is the business still running under another name?). Did the nursery stock get absorbed by a different nursery, such that I may be able to find what they used to carry at a different nursery (if so which one, contact info, etc.)?

Cheers!

Ken Gilanders retired and closed the nursery as I don't think his children wished to carry it on.

What happened to the nursery stock? In particular, I am hunting for a Chilean Nothofagus he used to carry (N. betuloides). In fact he had a whole slew of interesting genetic material. Has anyone else taken it over, and offers it for sale? Or is this genetic material lost forever to commerce?

Ken Gillanders still sells small amounts at local plant fairs and the like, however I don't think you'd be able to source your Nothofagus from him (or indeed anyone local down here).

The nursery stock has (almost entirely) gone and the gardens have been reorganised for display rather than propagation.
