I posted this on the perennials forum too.
A non internet friend was asking about sources of hebe - seed or plants. I can't remember seeing too many varieties here maybe the GC climate is a bit too humid but to be honest I don;t know. Anyone know any sources of seed or tube-stock? |

| If you know people with hebes growing in their gardens just ask for clippings, they are extremely easy to grow from cuttings. |

I have a number of varieties growing here. I have also had a lot of seed germinate from Wiri Spears. I have around 50 small plants in pots. The 2 mature seedlings I grew are only a little different to the parent, and good quality plants. I could send some of the smaller plants (in 2" pots, to your friend for the cost of postage, and include some cuttings from others. The following site might be helpful, and there is an excellent NZ web site with lots of photos of the Wiri varieties, that I do not seem to be able to find. Maybe one of the NZ members can help out. I do not have any idea how these perform up North. |

| As meegs said, they are oh so easy to grow from cuttings - if I don't pick up after trimming, I have lots of little hebes taking root in my garden. What sort of humidity do you get? In the summer, the Waikato region I live in can reach 80% humidity no problems and I have no issues growing them - I have a 100m hedge of different varieties and the worst problems I have is trying to weed under them and the cat eating the new growth! Here are a couple of places that I've found for your friend to start with, although having no internet means you may have to do a bit of leg work for her/him! http://www.nzseeds.co.nz/ This place has the best variety of seeds I've found on the web. http://www.sanctuary.org.nz/shop/seeds.html They sell Hebe speciosa (common name Napuka), which has much bigger leaves and stunning flowers, with has more open growth than say the wiri series. http://www.hebesoc.vispa.com/Q_&_A/frame-4.htm This is the hebe society FAQ - scroll down to Hebe speciosa in Australia, gives a link (that doesn't work) to an australian who grows NZ plants, but you could try the email address. By far, hebes are much easier and quicker to grow if cuttings can be obtained. Best of luck! GF |
