Leather ferns

How do Leather Ferns do in the ground? I can't remember their proper name (brain like a sieve lately). I have several growing in baskets which I split up and repotted yesterday. As they have grown so much I as wondering how they would do in the ground. I know what growing conditions they like but am unsure if they would spread too much or become a pest.

They would be part of the understory in the rainforest area which is well mulched but only gets enough water to keep things alive. I have several blechnums , both small and tree ferns, which are doing well, also Cyathea tree ferns.

Every time I think ferns in the ground I have images of a childhood neighbour who made the mistake of planting the common fishbone fern in the garden and I don't want that happening here.

Does anyone else have any planted in their garden?

RE: Leather ferns

Hi GH I have ferns here, also had the dreaded fishbone ferns that I pulled out, even though they were big because of no rain the roots did not go very far down and were so easy to pull up thank goodness. They were never watered and when you think about it Ferns are as tough as old boots and to me most ferns are invasive when put into the ground they multiply so fast underground. Have a look at the link below your Leather Fern name is Rumohra adiantiformis why dont you google the name as there is heaps on info on the Net. Cheers..MM.
< because of its vigor it could become invasive>

Here is a link that might be useful: Leather Fern

RE: Leather ferns

Thanks MM, just being lazy not searching for it myself but it seems to take ages to go through all the sites to find the right ones. I'm usually only on the internet for an hour or so a day unless I have to go on for work (like I'm supposed to be doing now - actually just waiting for a couple of emails to come in - good excuse to do some browsing).

I'll re-think planting the leather fern though it would be in a tough spot so I doubt it would get away but just to be sure I might put it in a big planter there instead.
