Scrub turkey eating my bananas

| We thought it was great a couple of weeks ago when we saw a scrub turkey. The first one we have seen around here and it gives us hope that more wildlife will turn up.
I was a bit wary about it nesting in the rainforest garden in the backyard but didn't think it would nest where dogs and kids play all the time. Most likely to nest in the gully in the paddock - that's OK.
I found out what it was doing in the garden - up in the banana tree eating bananas! The bunch is still small, the flower only came out a few weeks ago and the bunch has only just formed, but half of it is gone.
The trees are planted on a steep slope and are fairly tall so it is very difficult to cover the fruit safely. How do I keep the turkey out of my bananas? I want it to stay around, preferably in the paddock, but keep my fruit and gardens in one piece. I have enough trouble with drought, storms, kids, dogs, bandicoots, chooks, birds, etc without scrub turkeys too! It gets very disheartening as everytime something starts doing really well something comes along and damages it.
Any suggestions? |

| Sorry, but I couldn't help but have a bit of a chuckle. If it is difficult to get to the fruit to cover it, the only alternative I can think of is to fence it. I hope someone else can be of more help. |

I don't blame you for laughing, Pam. A scrub turkey perched on a bunch of bananas about 4 metres up a tree does look pretty silly, I laughed at first until I realised what it was doing! The house yard, where the bananas and rainforest garden are, is fenced with 1.2m netting but the turkey just hops straight over. If it can fly up about 4m to get the bananas I don't think a fence would help unless it was over 4m! Thanks for your email Robyn. Unless the turkey decides to actually nest in the yard it shouldn't be a problem with the mulch as it would have to carry it over a 1.2m netting fence. As far as I know, I think they just rake it with their claws. Hopefully that means my mulch is safe - it had better be as we only spread 4 large round bales (equal to 40 or 50 small rectangular bales) of mulch a month or so ago. I was thinking of a couple of strands of electric fencing above the netting fence might work but we tried that with our chooks once when they were flying out of their pen and that didn't work so I don't know if it is worth trying. If we try and cover the bunches of bananas I can see me adding to the "accidents in the garden" thread :) but I don't know what else will work short of relocating it which I don't want to do. |

| Hi Goldhills, had a thought about the bananas, if you had a very long stick, bamboo or two sticks joined with a bit of tube you might be able to place a large square of cloth/shade cloth over the end(stick in centre of cloth) and lift it higher than the bunch then let it sort of flop over the bunch which would stop the turkey getting to the top fruit and probably the bottom also if the cloth was large enough(the bananas should still ripen as they place those blue plastic bags over them in the plantations. |

| Bird netting will do the trick. |

At least, you will now have some training for next time when it's the turn of the King Parrots and/or flying foxes to attack the banana bunches... For the scrub turkey, I got rid of ours by pulling on one branch to shake the banana tree every time it landed in it. It took about 2 days to discourage it but it worked... As for your mulch, no, it won't take it away but it will scratch it away looking for grubs, insects, tubers. And they are not called Megapodes for nothing!! Eventually, it will change its path and leave on its own accord. Rose-Marie |

It might just find a mate and then your mulch will become a little hill for her to lay her eggs in. They are really amazing, and the one bird can almost move mountains in no time at all, he works non stop dragging and moving till the mulch pile gets to the right temperature to hatch the eggs. We used the mulch when they has finished with it to put back in the gardens all composted up. Marion |

| Thanks everyone. I think I'll try covering them with shadecloth first as I have plenty lying around. That's if we can get it up there without sliding down the slope. We had planned on moving the bananas to a more open area in spring as when we first planted them all that was there was a chook pen but we have moved the pen and planted gardens all around now. Don't mind the king parrots and flying foxes as they usually only have a few (up to now anyway) not most of the bunch! I don't mind sharing and the kids start whinging about eating bananas all the time except when they are in a cake or frozen - the kids eat them like iceblocks. Also the birds usually only eat them just as they start to ripen not when only a few cms long. I doubt if the turkey will nest in the yard as the rainforest is barely established, only started planting the understory 6 months ago, so still a bit too open. Banana-flavoued turkey - very funny!!! ha ha!! Actually if it keeps eating the bananas .... (just joking) Anyway thanks for your help, I'll keep you updated. cheers G |

| You're right about the electric fence - the current has to be able to earth for the shock to occur. If you throw your excess bananas in the freezer (which it seems you're already doing anyway), they make quick and easy smoothies when roughly chopped into the food processor with a little milk, or you can leave out the milk and tell them it's banana ice cream. Hmmm........ how long 'til it's mango season?? |

| You're right about the electric fence. We use it regularly to keep cows out and horses in or vice-versa. Besides using it ourselves, one house we rented years ago had the bottom 3 strands of the fence electrified - about 4" off the ground and between strands - to keep out dogs as the previous owners used to have geese and ducks. When we moved in, our chooks just used to go under or through the fence whenever they wanted. Didn't seem to worry them at all. When freezing bananas, I just peel them and, either wrap them individually (bit tedious when there is heaps) or put them in layers seperated with paper in an air tight container. The kids call them banana ice blocks and eat them like that and, if the kids ever leave enough, I use them in banana cakes, etc. Also make banana flavoured ice-cream - yummy! I do the same with mangos cut into pieces or make frozen mango bars - just like Weiss Mango Ice blocks - also very yummy - just watch the waistline! Haven't put the shadecloth up yet. I've been waiting for the better half to give me a hand but he has been going to work in the dark and getting home in the dark and I don't feel like trying to put shadecloth up in the dark. I haven't seen the turkey for a couple of days so I hope he stays away at least to the weekend. Fingers crossed. |

| Give up on your bananas this year, next year grab a couple of pups and move them somewhere else for you - - leave him with old banana trees. |

| I never did get round to putting shadecloth up. The next weekend I ended up with the flu lovingly brought home by the kids from school :(, and the next couple of weekends were spent with visitors or visiting others. The turkey totally demolished one whole though small bunch, and ate half of another but then seems to have had enough. Only seen him around a couple of times since. I don't think the turkey will worry about these bananas for a while as I found a guard dog, or should I say snake in the tree. We found him curled up on the bunch of bananas the other day and it has been hanging around there since. He is a carpet snake and only about 2m long so has a bit of growing to do yet and he can stay as long as he wants (though the birds don't like him). I couldn't get close enough for a decent photo but you can just see him curled up on the bananas.
and just hanging around

Isn't it amazing how some problems just solve themselves!! Good luck with that, Cheers, Dee. |

Thats great GH, I have a fondness for snakes only pythons really as they are harmless. Wonderful to see nature at work, and doing a good job of it I bet. You did well getting that close if you did not have telephoto lens. Great Pics Thanks for shareing ..Cheers..MM. |

| Who is going to pick the bunch if he is still there guarding It ??? Really is a beauty. Marion |

| We call him/her Charlie - what else! MM, the bananas are on a slope and there is a pathway just above the plants so I could get closer than if they were on level ground. Yes Marion, I'm wondering that too! Hopefully Charlie can move on to the next green bunch. |
