Gardening under glass questions

I have a tank 4ft x 2ft x 14ins high
I am going to redo it again but this time it will have a 1/4 ins inserted glass top.
My questions are:-
How deep a good potting soil?
Can I use a mix of Spag moss on the bottom and a top of potting mix if so how deep of each?
How many plants can I use? Is it better to have a large mix or a small mix using the same plants in either groups or scatered around?
A ground cover type of plant between gaps?
Driftwood and rocks?
What would be the best plants to buy "Australia".
Any other useful info would be appreciated
Cost is not my biggest concern

Other members may have differing ideas but I have used this method for tanks successfully previously: In the size of tank you have I would place 3cms of course charcoal in the bottom then a good quality potting mix with an extra 20% extra of course washed river sand mixed through the potting mix to improve aeration. You will need to select your plants very carefully, prefering slower growing varieties otherwise they will take over your tank too quickly. I wouldn't use a ground covering plant but perhaps an attractive looking pebble or stone to cover the potting mix, even one or two larger rocks to simulate boulders? Driftwood would be good too. Undulate the potting mix rather than a dead flat surface. Always the danger here of overwatering which can be controlled somewhat by the use of the glass top and condensation but never leave the glass top on permanently, rather lifting it ocasionally for airflow. |
