Hi,

Was just wondering if anyone knows where i can get information on frost.

like what mornings to expect it. and roughly when the last lot will be ie: early spring?.

Im in the wheatbelt of western australia.

And so far the only spot i have found is the weather.bom thingy site and they charge a fee for it.

thanks
mel.

g'day mel,

you may get forecast on frost but doubt that it will tell you exactly that you are going to get frost or not in your garden, there are lots of variables.

the best way is to have an outside thermometer and get up early before the sun check that temp', then when it gets light a bit you may see whether that equates to frost for you or not. then there is black frost the only way you know you have had that is when you see all the freeze damaged plants.

like now i have 0c outside but so far no indication of a frost i will see that when there is a bit of light outside from the dawn.

you could also check the isobar chart from bom online and see what cold air is coming your way, again no guarantees you yourself will get frost.

more: RE: Frost

me again mel,

just looked at the nmoc (isobar) chart at the bom site you have a low pressure sytem involved in your area with an associated cold front so i would generally expect that you are in store for a lot of very cold wind coming off the southern ocean (that low pressure sytem is way down there).

so generally would expect that frost will abound in that southern wa zone.

my temp has gone to 1c an hour after the first read still can't say about frost though not enough dawn yet.

also if you sign up to the free online 'weather zone' system you may be able to get more localised info' i find it very useful especially when comparing rain falls in this general area.

yet more: RE: Frost

g'day mel,

well we ended up with 2c at dawn, no white frost but in the super cold 0c at 4 am there was a black frost not all encompassing but damage to plants all the same. could have been that we had a very local cold front early on that dumped that super cold air. but with the early cloud cover the white frost didn't occur. now of course a magnificent 22c with lots of lovely sun.

RE: Frost

Do you watch GWN? Not an exact reference, but we do get when the cold fronts are coming and also when the really cold wind comes from the desert. If you have succeptible plants, the only way to stop damage is to keep the early morning sun off. That does as much damage as the frost itself. Pots can be brought under cover, water the plants before sun up, or cover them. We do not get a lot of frost in Esperance, and the cold wind here does not bring frost. Maybe by the time it gets to the wheatbelt!!!

RE: Frost

Hi Mel. I think and this is just me thinking....We tend to get frosts when it's very cold rather than when it's wet, so if the forecast is for very low or minus temps look out, if there is rain about I think you will be safe. I don't worry about frost as I have a lot of trees, but the grass at the school opp has frost when it's very chilly.

RE: Frost

I forgot that frost is the result of clear skies and a high pressure system over the area and the wind is less of a factor. So be ready when you go out on a clear, calm night! Cheryl is right, you don't get rain and frost- only when it falls as snow or sleet LOL

RE: Frost

Has anyone tried using Yates Stressguard? I started using it last summer on those tall perennials that seem to wilt on the first really hot windy day. Anyway, I noticed on the label that it can also be used to protect plants against light frosts. I don't have any exotics which are frost tender but do have quite a few natives, including several grevilleas. At the beginning of winter I sprayed any which I thought might be susceptible to frost damage and so far they are all OK. Some I didn't spray have suffered some burning of the leaves and I have now used Stressguard on these in the hope of preventing more damage.

RE: Frost

thanks to all!!!
if im up early enuff (shock! horror!) i can tell if their is a possible frost.
We get a lot of frosts here cept for today we got lovely, lovely rain!
So instead of running round like a headless chook in the wee hours of the morning, i was hoping to sort of find out where i could go to see if theres a possibilty of frost in the morn.
I will look into all the spots you all have kindly told me about.
thankyou so much!

You have a chance on Friday, there is supposed to be real cold, 2dgr for Perth forcast. I am 3.5km from the beach and we had frost just once this winter, on a very still cloudless night but I remember a year, must have been mid 80s, when I lost many violas and pansies to frost. I did not know what to do with it back than, now I know I have to water my plants before the sun 'looks' at them..
