White Onions

My husband planted white onion seedlings about 4 months ago. Today he dug one up and they haven't produced a bulb, they look more like a leek. He seems to think he put them in the wrong time of year, but I suspect that it's something to do with the soil.Welcome any help.

I'm not sure where you are or what your soil is like, but I had no luck with my white onions either...I thought maybe it was the seed?? I got it from the Re Store in Northbridge, they were Italian ones and I don't know how old the seed was when I got it.

How about lime? Onions love lime.

Thank you both for your responses.
We bought our onions as seedlings from Bunnings in Albany and they are growing in raised beds full of home made compost.

Now I don't think we knew that onions liked lime. Thank you.

You may have bought spring onions that don't bulb.

I planted white onions last year and they did well so I have put in more from seed this year. They are easy to grow. I have limey soil anyway, but being bulbs they also like Potato E, and the onion tribe do not like too rich soil.

I can ussure you that they weren't spring onions :-)
And I think our soil may be too rich as lots of compost is dug into it.
