dangerous for pets?

| My cats go berserk over blood and bone. They have torn the plastic bag open to get to it, and lick it up off the garden. Will it harm them? |

I'm not a vet, but probably in small quantities, no.
My dog is the same, but I'm only using the stuff lightly and usually with bulbs its mixed into the soil or further down the pot.
The odour is just heaven to dogs and cats, their ancestors would have been eating a whole lot of offal and revolting things.
Too much would cause gastric problems, I did a bit of a "google" search on "pets fertilizer poison" and came up with plenty of hits, mostly warning of chemicals containing metals such as iron.
No warnings on the bag I have in the garage.
So I guess just be cautious, keep your supply out of reach of the curious ones, and if you are using it in the garden lock them up while you're working, dig it into the soil and water it in, that should takek away a fair bit of the smell. |

Hmm - thought I answered this one! Mustn't have hit the send button.
Rats and mice seem to live off it quite happily. Dogs will come from miles around to sample it in the garden. I suspect that even in large quantities it is quite safe, unlesss consumed dry and without access to water. The worst i can think of is sever constipation.
It is, after all, pretty much what we feed our dogs and cats out of the can.
The problem I find with it, is the smell of their darling breaths when they accompany you on the couch after a feed of B & B.
I avoid using it in my garden mainly because hardly any of it goes to the plants, and I don't like the dogs treading all over my more tender plants. |

| Thank you both. I usually dig it in a bit and water, so should be OK. And I am now storing it in old plastic icecream tubs with tight lids. Yes, the kitty kisses are definitely to be avoided after a B&B forage!! |
