Waterlily waste

I don't know what I've done wrong here.No matter how often I clean the container out I end up with green slimy water rather than a healthy lustrous waterlily. I originally had it in sand in a plastic container within the outside pot then cleaned it all out and just placed the waterlily in the sand straight in the container. It seems to be shooting, but this green effect is not what I had in mind. It gets mid day and afternoon sun. Where have I gone wrong and is there something I can put in the water to make it look more presentable?

Jan, check whether the water lilies can handle copper. If they can, simply drop a short piece of copper pipe (or scrap copper of any kind) into the pot. It works well for keeping the bird baths algae-free.

There's probably a lot of nutrients in that sludge - I hope you gave it to a plant?

Try some Zeolite, that is supposed to remove excessive nutriments.

Hi all, thanks for the posts. Robyn It seems to be looking a bit clearer. We did have a drop of rain, not much and don't know if that helped Jan
