Hi all. I am fairly new to vegetable gardening and enjoying it very much. I recall as a child my grandmother made a rio or rhio pie (unsure of spelling) it was al long vegetable and tasted like sweet pumpkin.
Can anyone please identify this vegetable and if so tell me where I might obtain some seed to restart the family tradition.
Could it possibly have been sweet potato (red or gold) looks a bit like an elongated potato (but isn't potato) and to me tastes a lot like sweet pumpkin. There are plenty of recipes for sweet potato pie on the internet. Cheers, Dee.
I think it's Cucurbita moschata Dee. Same genus as pumpkins, squash, zucchini etc. In Australia, this group of pumpkins is often referred to as Gramma. It includes pumpkins like Butternut, Jap and Native Cat and was often used for pumpkin pie. I'm trying out a pumpkin called Winter Luxury Pie (Cucurbita pepo, so it's a close relative of the zucchini) for a pie pumpkin this year. I here it's one of the best texture-wise. If I remember, I'll post an update once I've tasted the pie!
