It's a shame because this sites so easy to use! Where'd everyone go?

Perhaps all the gardeners have given up with the drought and the water restrictions and are busy buying cement to cover the dust. I wonder if the difficulties associated with water restrictions has killed the ardour of a lot of gardeners. But then again people are still persisting with water-wasting, time-wasting and money-wasting lawns, so I guess there are still a few around that haven't turned to concrete. Or is there now a better site that people have migrated to?????????????

You'll find this topic discussed in the message linked below.

Giacomo,
Even if it comes down to painting a stick green and planting it into sand, gardening will always have a place in Australian society. While directions and trends are changing and those that can't adapt are failing there are still a lot of nurseries and horticulture clubs that are doing well despite the drought.

I've always largely been a lurker around these forums for several years. The fact that you need Adblock to enjoy this site has, to varying degrees, driven a lot of people away from most of the forums. As the Australian forums were essentially part of the space down the side of the house on a large American property, the group never really had sufficient interest to cope with the exodus. There were also quite a lot of subgroups created within this forum under Spike's dictatorship (maybe too many for the population size) so discussion is currently spread quite thin and the site looks a lot more desolate than it probably is.

some of the most regular posters have gone here, a lovely friendly forum, although small, you'll always get an answer and a great welcome there.

It may be that potential new Ausies to the forum find it too difficult to bother signing up - i tried to sign up a few months ago and had problems with the post code - the sign up page does not recognise 4 digit post codes - i finally signed up successfully tonight by adding a 0 in front of the post code!

RE: A shame no-one uses this site anymore!

yes subscribing is ridiculous as you need to use a yankee zip code and state initials, but the whole problem why lots of us left is the way this place is managed and by whom it is managed in their lust for money.

It's not that difficult signing up - any US zip code will get you in.

The reason most have left the boards here is the ridiculous amount of pop-up advertising.

Hi,
I wouldn't be surprised if it gets a bit more use in the near future.

RE: A shame no-one uses this site anymore!

At least this site and a couple of other gardening sites don't go down all the time, it does seem a little slow here but it doesn't matter when I have a look, it is never down. Several times over the last few months I have gone to join up with another gardening one and it seems to have been down more than up. I've been warned about that one anyway so don't think I will bother with it.

RE: A shame no-one uses this site anymore!

right now it looks like the aussie site here might revitalise hey?? oh well what goes 'round comes 'round.

i upgraded my firefox to v2.xx and seem to have picked up some speed around here of late, but it isn't only the aussie section protesting at how it is run the USA forums are a whole lot quieter than they used to be in the past.

i try to look in a couple of times a week to see what's what.

RE: A shame no-one uses this site anymore!

Old habits die hard so I look in here once a week also.
Yes I have heard that the other site is down more than up also.
And this one is always here, Tricia from Geelong tried to awaken the Roses forum up a while back but no takers.

Only time will tell...

Hi Misty and Len-long time no hear from.

 o
RE: A shame no-one uses this site anymore!

g'day richard,

i've responded to the odd post here and there but it has all been very very quiet, this is the most active thread going at the moment.

still the job doesn't get any easier when the original poster never comes back with some sort of reply, even to say the suggested remedy is poo or whatever lol.

How are you Richard its so good to hear from you, and how is life in Tassie ..

 o
RE: A shame no-one uses this site anymore!

I still check in occasionally. Not much going on here though.
Some very familiar names...Hi Barbara B, Sparaxis and Breeindy!!

 o
RE: A shame no-one uses this site anymore!

Well, there a lot of messages here in response to it being too quiet. I just posted one about my lamium, I hope I get a positive response. Also, the site dealing with Clematis is pretty regularly attended and popular, mainly US folks, though, not many Aussies.

 o
RE: A shame no-one uses this site anymore!

I drop by to see if there are questions I can answer, but onyl infrequently now. With corporate US ownership, drop down, pop up, sneak in sideways adverts everywhere, and the possibility of major virus, if I accidently click in the wrong spot at the wrong time - what a pain.
There are several entirely Aus sites operating now, some more active than others. Some non commercial, others associated with plant companies.
I answered a question for someone nearly 2 weeks back, and not so much as a thankyou!
Help make the aussie sites grow! (contact me privately for details)

 o
RE: A shame no-one uses this site anymore!

Well, I'm using it, this page, that is. See the messages above this one, I've been very satisfied to the response I had to my query.

 o
RE: A shame no-one uses this site anymore!

g'dasy sparaxis,

you don't show an e/mail addy in your details page. don't trust their e/mail contact as i've used it before and i'm sure mails have not gone through.

RE: A shame no-one uses this site anymore!

Hello! Sorry to hear this site has been so quiet. The American site has good traffic, but it's sometimes nicer to get localised information.

I was here years ago and had good advice from the aussies though :)

 o
RE: A shame no-one uses this site anymore!

I've just joined up, so see at least one person still uses it! Hope you'll be checking back on here from time to time at least :)

 o
RE: A shame no-one uses this site anymore!

 o
RE: A shame no-one uses this site anymore!

RE: A shame no-one uses this site anymore!

Hello Aussies!

I just moved here from Texas in the States where we had a very active GardenWeb community.

I'm no stranger to heat and humidity, but the sandy soils here in Perth are a new thing for me. Living in a rented property, so I'll be confined mostly to containers, but where there's a will, there's a way.

Hope to find everyone's favorite gardening books, magazines, gardens to visit, etc.

RE: A shame no-one uses this site anymore!

welcome aboard bobbi,

dry times in the west their 20+ year drought continues by and large.

anyhow you are welcome to visit our site there maybe some ideas there for you.

also your post may get missed by some better done as a new post from a new gardener.

the original heading here has a couple of issues related to it, one being that a new local goup formed and worked hard to build itself and took a lot away from this section, then that new group failed and by then this forum was pretty quiet caused mainly due to the fact that new members who try to subscribe find they can't do so as an aussie they need to use a USA locality name and zip code, this came about at the time GW was sold.
