Lawn Problems

Hi
I planted a few months ago from seed a mix of fescue and rye grass. It has grown very well, but in the last few weeks it has "yellowed" off. I put it down to frosts, but now dont think it is that. WHen u walk on it or press yr hand over the lawn, a "greyish ash" rises from below into the air. Jusl like smoke from ashes. What could this be? Some kind of disease? I have no idea?

RE: Lawn Problems

It sounds like it may be powdery mildew. If you Google in 'lawn diseases' and click on Australian sites, you will find some information. The other option is to ask at your local nursery.
Cheers,
Dee.

Thx deejaus

I thoiught powdery mildew only affected plants like roses? Hmmmm in lawns? Would this cause the lawn to go yellow, or is this just frosts?

RE: Lawn Problems

Yes lawns definitely can suffer with powdery mildew. There are different types of powdery mildew. It is not all that common on lawns.
To your other question...yes frost may well cause the lawn to yellow. But it was your remark about the "greyish ash" that made me think it could be p. mildew.
I would suggest you check with your neighbours and see if any of them have a similar problem. It wouldn't hurt to ask at your local nursery either. They would know if the problem is common in your area.
Cheers,
Dee.
