NZ cabbage tree (cordyline)

Have any of you ever struck branches form a New Zealand cabbage tree (cordyline australis)? My in-laws cut their tree down (it was about 5.5 m tall) and I didn't want any of it to go to waste so we stuck a few branches in pots and I was wondering if I should put the rest in as well. I haven't got anymore pots that are big enough so I was going to stick them in the ground as they are. Do you think they'll take? I want to keep one or two but in October I am having a plant sale and thought I might get something for the others if they do alright. How much should I expect to get for them? They are taller than me (not difficult, I'm only 5ft 2) and each has a good head. I hope they take.
Donna.

They should take, I am not sure if it is the right time to take cuttings, it is a wee bit too cold, but with plants you never know, they might decide it is OK for them to send out roots. I ususally take these cuttings in late spring and yes, they usually take. Good luck.

I forgot to mention that the branches are a few inches thick. Will that make a difference? I am used to potting young ones, about an inch or so thick. I know those are easy to strike. But these new ones are at least the thickness of my upper arm.

I reckon you will be very lucky to have success with C. australis. From memory they are extremely hard to vegetatively propagate, hence all the seed grown plants we see in the nurseries. Post your question on the New Zealand forum for an answer direct from the horses mouth.

You can but only try, nothing lost in having a go.
I have seen the cabbage tree fallen over in the bush and it was growing from along the main trunk. The main trunk if not taken out will often re-shoot
They are usually grown from seed.

I seem to recall reading in a classic book on NZ plants (Laing & Blackwell, which I don't own now), this anecdote about Cordyline australis: when early NZ settlers were carving out the clearings for their small farms they had a particular problem with the NZ cabbage tree. When they chopped into them with their axes, every chip that flew away and landed on the moist ground soon sprouted and took root, making a new plant.

I suspect this would only have happened under a particular regime of temperature, rainfall and humidity.

Thanks, I can only hope.
