SEQ Weather

This is crazy. We have gone three winters without rain and now we are having enough rain every month that we do not have to water the plants and it has not got cold.
Plants are going mad. Hippies and Torch Heamanthis are bursting from ground, only about six weeks or so too early.
One thing for sure is that this years Open Garden will be different.

RE: SEQ Weather

Ian was just thinking the same today as we had some solid showers. I haven't had to water anything bar under-cover pot-plants (one huge relief) and yes it's so mild. Went down to the growing area today and I had Alstroemerias out and musk mallow seedlings flowering and everything else had put on about 2 inches of growth. Maybe this is the way it "used" to be, but we've had the drought so long I've forgotten what's normal. of course August ahead, could throw us some curves.
Anyway enjoy it for now. I have to do a big fertilizer blitz this weekend as so much got leached out.

Apart from the big rain we had a few weeks ago we have had nothing to speak of apart from 2:5mm one day then another 1:5mm. This afternoon we had a couple of small showers more like a mist than anything, so slight I doubt if it would have touched the sides of the rain gauge.

Today I had to water all the plants only did half as it takes about four hours and I was shocked to find when feeling the soil underneath the trees and shrubs how dry it was considering most are under 8-12 inches of wood chip mulch and great piles of gum leaves, but I suppose thats not surprising after these bitterly cold winds we are having drying all the moisture up.

Now after saying that, yes we have had a much milder Winter, but rain apart from the big deluge which was fantastic we down here in the very south side, have had not much rain at all....MM

There is another "oscillation" other than the SOI affecting our weather. It is called the Madden Julian Oscillation and this is the one apparently responsible for our recent showers.

Her is a link for those interested.
