| Hi all
I've got a large Viburnum Tinus in a full sun position near our mailbox. I'd like to move it to a dappled sun position in our backyard to screen an ugly extension from our neighbors. Its around 3 metres high and healthy. Does anyone have any particular experience with transplanting one of these? Do they transplant well? How extensive is the root system likely to be? Also, will moving from a full sun to part sun location stunt its growth? I'm not fussed about flowers, but if the whole plant shrinks down, I may as well not bother moving it. |

| When you think of the effort involved moving it, digging it up, cutting it back, levering it out and then planting it again, and wondering if it will make it - I think it would be a lot easier to go and select a new shrub from the nursery that is suitable for your position. |

| Anything 3 metres is going to have a pretty big root ball. I transplanted a Euonymus close to that size once but I cut it back first and it was just an experiment since I read that they do transplant very easily. It settled in nicely but having been cut back it was not that much bigger than a new plant from the nursery. But it was free for a budget garden makeover and it was an interesting experiment so I was happy with the result. I don't know how it would have gone if I hadn't cut it back. I've transplanted smaller things with mixed results. If I'm really keen to keep it I take cuttings. It's a tough call. I've seen trees transplanted by professionals and sometimes it makes a lot of sense if it's a tree that would take years to grow to the same size. But a shrub, I don't know, they say even tubers grow faster than larger pots from the nursery. So I don't know, the more established they are the more they suffer from stress? It's a balancing act isn't it, what size will give you the healthiest fastest result. |
