Adenium or Fortune Tree

Has anyone grown these in the Sydney area? I bought two good sized plants and they dont look the best. I got them just before the deluge of rain hit Sydney and found them one day swimming in water because the drainage hole in the pot was not big enough. I drained that and pulled them under the balcony for protection from the rain, as it says they dont like wet feet. Now I'm wondering if I should put them out in the sunshine and forget about watering for a while. Why do I buy these plants at the markets that I had no intention of buying??? They cost me forty bucks. Help please. Thanks.

I'm further north but yes too much water in colder weather can be fatal & cause roting. I would certainly move them out again gradually for more sun and lay off the water & fingers crossed.

Thanks alison, Obviously these are not that popular going by the response to my question. Mine are looking decidedly sick. Do you think I should cut off the growth and let the roots try and recover? Are they worth growing? How big is yours? Thanks again, Sallyrose

I've lost a couple to root rot. One I did lop off the withered top part and dusted with sulphur and it seemed to recover but couple months later, whole thing caved in. Probably another cause.
I do like them, when they eventually flower, they are quite pretty, and in the meantime the caudiform and swollen trunks are interesting. I persevered cause most of mine were grown from seed and are anything from 10 - 18 inches high.
If you go into the cacti and succulent section in OZ or the one in the US forums you may get a lot more help.

I am in Sydney and have lost a couple to root rot, but currently have one doing OK (I think!) They lose their leaves in the cooler weather but as long as you keep them dry they should be OK again in Spring. Just don't overwater. Feel around the base - if squishy then you have trouble and need to dry it out asap.

I am certainly no expert, but so far so good..... Water them really sparingly - I wouldn't water yours again for maybe a couple of months, and if the soil is still wet, then I'd dry it out somehow - maybe by taking the whole plant out of the pot for a few days to let the soil dry out. Some sunshine would be good for it too.
