establishing young plants in the cold

Hi
I've planted a couple of shrubs/small trees in my garden and the weather has turned a little chilly here. My question is how much water do they need to establish as I have really cut back on watering the established garden by now. The plants in question are two small gossamer wattles, some westringa and prostanthera and a chinese star jasmine.
My soil is sandy and very well drained. I'm in Sydney and the temps are about 15 - 18 degrees and of course it's been really dry. I usually water every day for a while to keep the roots moist, but in this weather is that a good idea?
thanks
Andrea

If you are in a sandy part of Sydney, chances are you don't really have problems with frost. I have been planting over the past couple of months, watering every day or second day (in the morning) for the first week or two. After this, the whole garden gets a weekly watering by hand on Sunday morning. This seems to be keeping them alive and growing quite well. You really can't rely on rain, because it is almost non existant. I find that it is the dryness of the winter which kills the plants more than anything else, but be cautious not to overwater if they don't like moist soil. It really depends on the species.
