To all the lovely folk who have been interested in the monarch caterpillars progress.
The first of the butterflies emerged from their chrysalis on May 14th. Mother's Day of all days.
After allowing their wings to stretch and dry , they (3 of them) were taken out and released onto the golden buddleia which still has plenty of flower on it. Once released, the brand new butterflies spent about 2 1/2 hours on the flower that they were placed on, there was some warm late afternoon sun for them; and Juliet and I went out to check their progress from time to time. Just before it got dark, our last check showed that all three young butterflies had managed to move on from their release site. |

Another two butterflies emerged today, and after Juliet came home from school , we took them out and released them onto the golden buddleia as well. I am amazed at how quickly they are going through the pupae stage. I expected them to stay there in their frozen stage of seemingly inanimation until the spring. I suppose the interest in the monarch caterpillars has made me more aware of some of the munching grubs that you can find in the garden. The common ones that can devastate your flowers or vegie garden, are promptly despatched to the chooks. This afternoon though, we have discovered two new and strange looking caterpillars , trying to merge into the background, on our grevillea "Pink Pokers" ; Grevillea magnifica. I have tried taking some photo's of them today with the little digital camera; but even in the macro mode, the results are not good. I think if I want good pics, the old SLR is the way to go.
