soil to dry and dusty, want to make a fernery

| gday, just outside our bathroom is a small area with a couple of weeds, a philodendron and a native spikey grass thing, the soil is quite dry and dusty, we want to add a small pond for frogs and plant ferns and other shade loving natives, any idea what we can do to the soil, i want to get rid of the philodendron and the weeds and have birds nest ferns, elk horn on the wall and other small nitive ferns and possible terrestrial orchids growing around the pond, any idea's? can you please email me at demonology_and_heartache891@hotmail.com as i will probably forget to check here, thanks guys, oh also i'm just north of brisbane, thanks |

| The first thing I would do is to remove anything you don't want. Dig the soil over with some compost and wetting agent. Mulch the area with some leaf mulch or similar. Once the soil starts to hold a bit of moisture, start planting some tree ferns and other plants. There are also lots of different natives which do well in shady areas, it all depends on how tall you want them to grow. I would suggest a visit to your local native nursery, as they would have a good range of the types of plants which grow well in your area. |

| Why is the soil dry and dusty ? Does it get rain (if it ever rains near you), or is the area up under the eaves ? I agree with Pos02, you need to add some organic matter, then the moisture will be held in the soil. You will also gets some worms, this is good too. Make sure you mulch when you have put the plants in. Sounds like a lovely idea. I have a similar area in my garden. Popi |
