The progress of our Monarch babies

Thank you to all the people who replied to the posting about our butterfly babies. That link to the butterfly site was pretty awesome ... I didn't realise they had such a huge following...
Our babies ( some 2 doz of them ) are doing well. They are resident in a large shoe box and are steadily chomping their way through ever increasing amounts of milkweed. Over the last couple of days 2 of them have turned to chrysalis and today, a third one has climbed up and anchored itself, in preparation to follow suit.
The kids are entranced ... so am I.

Thanks for the reply. I have taken some pics today of them, and I am being tutored in the art of posting them, so who knows in the future ... Endangered as such I don't really know. What I do know is that they have a pretty restricted diet , eating only some of the milkweed species. Bit like the koala, only eating a handful of Eucalypt species. If there are no milkweed plants available, while you might get a few adults drop in for a nectar feed (they love the buddleia) they won't lay eggs.
I have a milkweed that I have kept solely for the Monarchs to lay their eggs on, and so it doesn't get out of hand and cast seeds to the wind, I chop the flowers off it ...

Rosalie,
That is a most interesting thing to be doing for your children. I am sure they will learn a lot about butterflies this way.
Tsunami,
Monarch butterflies are not an endangered species here. They are not a native Australian butterfly. You can read the facts at the Australian Museum Online.
Cheers,
Dee.
