night time visitor

No pictures - it,s too dark - but we now have another regular predator visiting our garden - a barking owl. I went out to shift the hose (yep - we're still allowed to use them on the sushine coast) and got the shock of my life to see a huge owl within feet of me. We'd heard him/her for the past two weeks but had never seen him/her.

the owl joins the kookaburras who feast on the skinks and handouts from She Who Must Be Obeyed, the magpies - after more hand outs and also earning their keep by keeping down the nasties and not to forget the magpie butchr birds - we've got an agreement, they get a free meal each day so long as they don't attack the finches - seems to work so far.

Nice to have all the birds about.
We often have Tawny Frogmouths in our gum trees just before Christmas
They are the closest to Owls I have ever seen here,
I have heard of barking owls, is the sound they make like a dog,
I dont mean small dog either, just curious though ...MM.

hi misty - - there's a link below which has the barking owl hoot.

they also make a terrible screaching noise at times - they're also called screaming woman owl/bird - I couldn't find an mp3 of that though

Here is a link that might be useful: barking owl

Hi Paradisi,
How interesting! I just played the sound for my husband without telling him what it was...he guessed that it was a dog. Was he surprised when I showed him what it actually was. Neither of us had heard of a barking owl before. So you learn something every day. Thanks for the link.
Cheers,
Dee.

It is lovely to have the wildlife around, sometimes they can be a bit of a problem, but I wouldn't want to be without them. I would love an Owl or two, never see them here.
