New to forum & gardening - a few questions

| Hey,
Hows everyone going? I'm pritty new to gardening, so I have a few questions :) Hope I've got the right forum!
First question is about cuttings. I've had some sucess with them (mostly indoor plants like begonia, african violet etc) and I think that some of my bougainvillea cuttings may strike.
However does anyone know how to propagate May (Hawthorne, Crategus) My mum has been trying to grow cuttings of this plant with no success. It seems to be a very stubborn plant to grow from cuttings (and I've read that it can take 20 years to flower from seed - I'd be in my early forties by then!)
The second question is about Tibouchina. Is it possible to grow it in a frost prone area like Warwick/Stanthorpe with protection from the frost - or does the plant need high air temperatures/humidity.
Any help really appreciated!

| Oops, I forgot to add something to the post! Typical newbie huh! In a frost protected area, can bougainvillea grow successfully. For example if the nite temps get to 0 celcius, but the plant is protected from frost, will it grow? Thanks, dan |

| Hi and Welcome to the Forum. Bougainvillea will grow in Victoria so just cover if you are worried about frosts, I know Tibouchina does not like exposure, but likes sun I am sure it grown further south, once again cover in the frosty weather. But I could be wrong ask at your Local Nursery. Seems your Hawthorn is a problem and if it takes 20 years to flower I would get tired of waiting too, but is it the Hawthorn you have that takes that long as there are different species. Do a bit of Googling with its right name I am sure you will find the right answer. Hope this helps a little. MM. |

| Hawthorn grows so unbelievably easy from the seeds scattered by birds. Here in Victoria it is considered a weed. I know there are selected varieties, and you will not necessarily get as good a plant from a seed, but they are easy from seed. |

Tibouchina grows really well in Melbourne, they are quite common down here, if that helps. Cheers, Dee. |

Hi, Hawthorn is normally grown from seed commercially. The special cultivars - doubles and good colours are normally grafted. Not difficult and good fun to try. Maybe a project for next year? Good luck with the gardening and welcome to the forum. Cheers Jan |

| Indian Hawthorn is a beautiful bush and easy to grow. They use it for landscaping city parks here in adelaide. Worthwhile looking into - its not meant to exceed about 4 feet. |

Hey there! I can send you some seeds or even a sapling if you like. The house we have recently bought has many mature trees, and down the road they are used as a wind break along the old farms. If you would like some seed or a sapling - just email me via My Page. They are the berry Hawthorn (Crategus)- I think my Nana used to refer to them as May! Cheers. |

Mild frost will burn a Tibouchina but rarely kill an established one. What you have to decide is whether you want to look at a burnt shrub/tree until the time when you can safely prune it, (after the last frost). If you get severe frosts you would be better advised to plant something else. Planting frost tender plants in a protected position, where they will NOT receive the morning sun, will greatly increase their chances of survival. |
