Can someone let me know whether it is possible to grow clematis and dogwood successfully in coastal Sydney or do they both need cooler winters than we have? Many thanks!

RE: Clematis and Dogwood

Dogwood, no, not cold enough; Clematis, I was successful with a jackmanii hybrid, 'Daniel Deronda' - I had two but Clematis 'wilt' got one (I saved the other) - and more successful with the white C. Spooneri when I lived at Allambie Heights in Sydney. Here, just west of Tweed HEads, I planted last winter a few, the most successful being C. Venosa Violacea; 'Fair Rosamund'; 'Miss Falconer' and 'Polish Spirit'. Also the Aussie natives, Aristata and Glycinoides, both are doing well. Try a few but do some research on clematis first, they need special attention, and also watch for the 'wilt', which is believed to be a fungal disease, Good luck!
