Plants with tall flowers

| I would like to create a feature in my garden using plants that have flowers on a tall stem.
I already have in mind.....
Kangaroo Paw
Agapanthus
Spear Plant (?) - you see them on the side of the road in Sydney
There is also a cactus like plant that's spikey on the tips and edges of the leaves, it's coloured yellow and green and has a flower that reaches 3 metres into the air and is magnificent!
Anyway does anyone have any other suggestions of plants I could use for this feature? |

| I can think of two off the top of my head: the tree dahlia, which will grow up to 5m tall in the right conditions. (It's herbaceous and will die down after flowering, only to rise again the following year.) Or giant sunflowers (about 3m tall), if you don't mind annuals and can wait until spring to plant them. Both are being sold on ebay if you can't get them locally. They'll need watering, though. |

| The spear plant you are refering to is the Gymea Lily, Doryanthes Excelisia. They take a few years to start flowering, but are very spectacular when they are flowering. You could also try kangaroo grass themeda australis. This tends to set seed and multiply by itself, but is virtually indestructible - might be useful for a rocky pocket of garden. |

Presumably the 'cactus like plant' is one of the variegated forms of Agave americana. Allium giganteum or Allium Globemaster could also be of interest. Bulbs go on sale about this time of year. |
