| Hi All,
Not sure about the rest of you, but those who love native plants will appreciate how wonderful they look when framed by rocks, particularly large lumps of granite and sandstone. The obvious question is : is there an environmentally responsible source for this rock ? I would imagine that building sites must be one source, but I doubt that the owner of the local garden supply yard spends too many sleepless nights wondering where their rock supply originated.
I have the same qualms when buying river pebbles - wonderful stuff, but surely the river needed those pebbles more than I do ?
Cheers,
Artie |

| try ringing some of the nearest country councils to you - they quite often have sources of all sorts of stone on private farms - and if the quarry is already built your little bit isn't going to do too much damage as for river stones - I agree with you. You can make your own by getting fragments from masons or quarries and tumbling them in a cement mixer |

| You can also make your own rocks, or have them made for you. When done properly they look real but are only a fraction of the weight. A friend from years ago used to make them and he had some great waterfalls that were very realistic. I don't know anyone who does this now but I but I'll have a browse around later and see what I can find. |

| I saw 'made' rocks in a garden suppliers the other day - they wanted $400 for one rock about 30cm high I'll do without! |

| I made a few rocks last year with the concrete left over from the shed extension slab.. I tried shovelling it into supermarket bags but it went everywhere I didn't want it to go, so I ended up with lots of cow pat shaped rocks and Dairy Queen type shapes with points on top...I did get to use a few as I managed to rough them up a bit before they set. Only trouble was they were not the right colour, but as it was a spur of the moment thing as they were emptying the commercial concrete mixer I had no time to go and buy any of that coloured powder..The odd shaped ones were very useful down the chook yard keeping the huge hill of soil in place that the chook bath in, so none were wasted...Yes I was shocked at the price of those fibreglass ones too......Cheers...MM. PS. But do they pebbles come from our rivers, after all everything else comes from over the seas. |

| I seem to recall an episode of Burke's Backyard that showed how to make fake rocks; something to do with piling soil into aproximately the right shape in the right position, then covering with chook wire and trowelling on thick colored cement. Maybe their website still has instructions, but it was years ago. I think they also used latex molds taken from real rocks to get the surface texture just right. Sounds like a lot of work but could be fun. |
