| after reading the link below that mm posted in the exchange forum Im a bit worried!
I planted a ponytail next to my house about 4 years ago and I think it really has to come out before it gets bigger, it just wont fit into that garden bed if it gets that big. lol
does anyone know how successful it would be to dig out of the garden and put in a pot? it's been in for about 4 years and is 1.5 metres high, and the base is about 20cms across. do they have a large root system to dig out?
I really dont want to lose it but I really dont think it can stay where it is (unless it stops growing now) :)

TG...I would not worry too much about it I think that maybe they take a long time to get to that height..If you look at this pic taken today this plant was given to me in July 2004 and it has only grown about 30 cms in that time, or should I say that the leaves are sitting up straighter as after it was manhandled I remember it well it went very droopy for a while so I dont think that it has grown at all..It is a fantastic plant I never water it actually I never water anything in that Mexican Garden except the little plants in Pedro's baskets.
If you look at the very small pony tails in the pots the one on the right and the second left I have had them around two years and they have grown just a little bit more than the big one, the base had got a big bigger. Hope this helps a bit...Cheers..MM. |

My daughter (not a gardner by any means) just dug around hers, dragged it across the yard and popped it into another hole. She did water it in well and it never looked back. It was about 60cm at the base. I think they are pretty hardy. |

I also moved mine when it was about 2 metres high and it thrived. It is now about 3-4 metres tall and the bulb at the base is about a metre across. It is also right next to our house. That was about 14 years ago. They are very hardy. Mine has lots of baby ponytails growing out of the trunk. I plan to cut these off and start some new ones next spring. My first attempt, so it will be interesting to see how I go. I also have one about 1 metre tall growing in a pot on the verandah and it is doing very well. They are lovely structural plants. Good luck with yours. Halina |

| yeh too easy trancegemini, they are of the lilly family and grow like succulants, so you don't need much of a root ball for them to keep growing, they can live for very long periods just from their reserves in the bulb, their habitat the mexican deserts where they border the rain forest/jungle. to display the bulb better when you move it don't plant it as deep, this won't hurt the plant either. they do grow large but take hundereds of year well almost so probably the house would fall down long before the pony tail (not a palms or even related) pushes it over which i doubt it would they aren't very agressive growers. len |

| thanks everyone, I'll give it a go. the more I think about it the more I'd like to pot it up again and move it to the patio anyway. mm, I love your mexican garden, it's adorable, youve got me wondering where I could fit one in at my place :) |

| yeh just buy a big pot and stick it in it hey they take well to being very root bound, and adding new potting medium when needed is a breeze with them. remember to trim off all or most of the mature leaves to stop too much shock from moisture loss that always helps. remember to display the bulb. len |

| My ponytails (three plants that all came in the same 20 cm pot originally, and I couldn't separate them without hurting them, so the three stayed together)got to be about 3.5 metres high, over a period of about 15 years. They grew more quickly in the first ten years, to about 3 metres high, then slowed down. This year they bloomed, big white blooms on 'branches' out of the centres. The base of each one is about 800cm diam. The Mt Cootha Gardens in Bris had a ponytail that was much bigger, but I don't know how old it was. |

| Hi guys, I'm looking to plant out a couple of my pony tails and need to know how to prepare the soil for them. Any help greatly appreciated. Regards Dale Busselton WA |

| g'day dale, just stick 'em in the ground hey, they aren't a fussy plant outside of well drained is about it, if you have clay soil use some gypsum and stand back realy. you will find they grow that littel faster once in the ground. hey there is a variagated variety out in yankee land! now that will be something different. len |

| Hi all I have a question re my Pony Tail.I bought it 10 years ago as a 15 year old plant in a 10 in pot. I up sized the pot a couple of times then built it a raised round 6ft garden 5 years ago. It has flowered for the first time. I'm wondering if it will produce viable seeds. ie self pollinating or does there have to be both male and female plants. thanks Maree. |
RE: ponytail palm

| g'day maree, i can't help with the viable seed question, i can say i have never heard of them being germinate from seed. maybe you might need to google the question, their native habitat is from the mexican desert where the rain forest meets the desert, so just maybe there is a special bug that pollinates them so you may need to learn hand pollination skills? anyhow a tip on posting this is an old thread you have a new question it could be missed here in cases like this if you have a new question start a new thread. good luck with the pollination question keep us informed if you would please. len |

| I have 2 large pony tail plants that are just too big to move. They both have many small plants growing from the trunk. Ques - Is it possible to remove the young plants and re-pot them ????? Will they take root and grow from there ??? |
